Luca Di Tomaso

Cantina Tomaso Gianolio

Superiore Barbera d'Alba 2020

Nice barbera, a grape I don’t always love. Quite savory, with some berry to balance. Some dusty tannins and maybe a slight hint of heat. Nice acid on the finish. — 2 months ago

Cantina Tomaso Gianolio

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2019

I’ve been wanting to try the wines of Cantina Tomaso Gianolio for years but finding them on this side of the Atlantic has been a challenge. As of now, I don’t know much about where Davide and Igor Gianolio source their fruit but the family has been making these wines in a traditional manner for over 90 years so I’m sure the source is exceptional. So traditional, even the cork is short and stubby, lol!

Popped and poured; enjoyed over two days. Consistent throughout. The 2019 pours a light garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing and tar forward early but it quickly transforms into a veritable beauty with notes of raspberries, rose water, tar, star anise, talcum powder, and dry, stony earth. On the palate, the with is dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Elegant and lovely expression of the 2019 vintage. Drink now with patience and through 2044 (if the cork will keep that long). Huge thanks to

Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Quite excellent and very excited for what this will be in a few more years. Decanted 4 hours which I’d suggest at this stage. Beautiful in the glass, characteristic Nebbiolo hint of translucency even in a more powerful red. Nose goes on and on and the palate matches with lots of dark and dried berry fruit, some leathery notes, and that lifting quasi menthol character. Tannins are certainly present - needs food. Great acid and finish. What a value. — 3 months ago

Laborde Double Select Uco Valley Syrah 2020

A nice Syrah for under $30. Not an extraordinary Syrah, but it tastes like Syrah and is a good value at its price point. — 6 months ago

Barbera d'Asti 2022

Medium ruby in color; cherries, dried herbs, and black pepper on the nose; high acidity, medium tannins; tastes like tart cherries, blackberries, and crushed gravel with a long finish. Nellie says it's ok. I love it. — 8 months ago

Uvaggio Coste della Sesia Rosso Nebbiolo Blend 2019

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course two hours. The 2019 “Uvaggio”pours, a bright garnet color with a transparent core, moving to a rose colored rim. Medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of Morello cherry, strawberry, raspberry, pink roses, talcum powder, a smell that reminds me of the produce section in a grocery store of a developing country (yeah, it’s specific but, fight me), dried green herbs, and stony earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is long, juicy and a touch spicy with a bit of black pepper that I find quite intriguing. A delicious pairing with lamb/beef kofta. All in all, another brilliant vintage of “Uvaggio” and further proof that the work of Luca DeMarchi at Proprieta Sperino is worthy of serious attention. Drink now through 2034. — 4 months ago
