Château d'Yquem

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2007

No formal notes . Pretty deep Amber , copper colour . Intense marmalade , saffron , creme caramel . Rich on the palate with rich marmalade , saffron notes . Good acidity , but rich. Good length . This is drinkable now and shows quite an advanced colour , though due to its richness will probably carry on delivering for another 20 years , perhaps longer .

This was a rather fascinating evening put together by our incredibly generous host. All 2007 reds were served blind in two flights: 1st Mouton, Haut Brion, Cheval Blanc , La Mission Haut Brion then Latour , Lafite , Petrus and Margaux . Overall the wines showed well , and were mostly enjoyable to drink now , though there is no rush . This somewhat maligned vintage can give a lot of enjoyment in the right environment, I certainly wouldn’t hold back from opening or purchasing any of these wines . They mostly show good density of fruit , personality and elegance , with good freshness. These are not powerful wines , and at times perhaps the fruit can be a little cooler or greener but I was pleasantly surprised by the way they performed , just goes to show you should never write off a vintage without trying the wines !

Château Rieussec

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2016

Terrific example of a high quality Sauternes with lemon zest, peach, apricot and pineapple plus dried apricot, honey, beeswax, saffron, ginger, vanilla and butterscotch. Excellent acidity to balance the restrained sweetness of the wine. Still young with plenty of room to develop. — 9 months ago

Clos de la Coulée de Serrant Savennières Chenin Blanc 1990

Ripe to bruised yellow apple, mushrooms, saffron, almond and walnuts husk. A but if phenolic grip on the finish. Will revisit day 2 cause it needs time to air. DAY 2: much better! Even more pure fruit, high concentration, slightly dried yellow flowers, less almond and some candied apple. Should have saved more for day 2! — 4 years ago

Le Méal Blanc Hermitage Marsanne 1999

Served with Fisherman’s Pasta - sablefish, mussels, saffron gnocchetti pasta, fennel, fresh baguette toast. Well stored Hermitage Blanc is a special experience and this bottle of 1999 “Le Méal” was no exception. Fascinating notes of clove, yellow flowers, apricot, marmalade, honeysuckle, and sunflower seed. Next to the Montrachet, the acid is perceived to be low and there’s an almost oily texture. Delicious. — 5 months ago

La Grande Année Brut Chardonnay - Pinot Noir Rosé Blend 2007

Strawberry Fields Forever. Very pleasant rosé with aforementioned strawberry present and a little lemon zest, if not brioche. Much going on in every glass. — 9 months ago
