Silent Witness

Montirius

Terre des Aînés Gigondas Red Rhone Blend 2019

Vintage 2019 | I love this wine. It’s a idiosyncratic character. A Beast. Not willing to show charm. Very old school: classic smell, peat, cedar. Hint of chocolate. I thought it to be a Tannat, that says it. Put away in the cellar for another 3 - 5 years and get it on a windy, rainy autumnday for a dinner with wild boar of deer. Probably you will be amazed and witness a miracle. — 2 years ago

No. 6 Dijon Free Johan Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

Completely smitten with this dense, complex, and entirely palatable Chardonnay.

Yellow straw color that hints at minor oak aging. Beautiful and intense aromas of struck match, toasted marshmallow, baked bread, pineapple, and guava. Absolutely no vanillin coming through. Upon cold opening it was much more tropical focused and then warmed up to become more toasty. Was fun to witness the evolution.

Sharp acid edge and medium bodied. Drinks clean and has a buttered popcorn and golden apple dialect.

Gorgeous!

Insignia Estate Grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

I love good wine and don’t mind paying for it if it is truly exquisite. This one didn’t meet that expectation. Medium body with a nice finish but it lapsed in the middle when it almost went silent. Had hoped it would express more over time but after about 2 hours it fell flat. Oh well, win some, lose some. — 5 years ago

Try a younger vintage. This producer is typically outstanding.

Glen Mhor

Silent Gordon & MacPhail 38 Year Old Single Malt Whiskey

Unlike last night this is all tongue and no bite in the cheeks. Rich in flavor as expected from the age and color. Silent referring if I recall correctly to the fact that it is closed. Don’t think it ever produced a single malt and was part of blends back in the day. ABV 40% — 2 years ago

Evidently there were some distillery bottlings but mainly part of blends or sold to independent’s as in this case. - Ownership of Glen Mhor and Glen Albyn was transferred to Distillers Company Ltd (DCL, later Diageo)in 1972 by John Birnie's son William, but sadly the distillery was deemed to be insufficiently profitable when DCL needed to make cuts in the slump of the early 1980s, and both distilleries were closed. Glen Mhor was dismantled in 1986 and demolished in 1988. The site has now been developed into shops.
Glen Mhor's house style is described in Michael Jackson's Malt Whisky Companion as 'Aromatic, treacly. Quite sweet. With dessert or after dinner.' Some malt was released as a distillery bottling, although most of the output went to blenders. There are still some independent bottlings available.
