Terhune Orchards

Domaine des Orchis (Philippe Héritier)

Quintessence d'Altesse Roussette de Savoie 2019

High Alpine stuff - aromatic, firm scaffolding.

A dank funk of mossy biscuit, mountain florals, orchards and pitty stone fruits. The baked, oxidized versions, with specks of cinnamon and nutmeg. Browned just the way I like.

Full body, cool and waxy depart from the high acid train ride of Summer 2022. It's nice to bounce back and forth, so I remember how acid feels on my teeth.

Flavors in the bitter almond, bosc pear, white jasmine, theme.

La Sœur Cadette Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2017

Pleasant and simple. Chardonnay of the most commons - white flowers, orchards, some nice notes of tarragon and smokey tropical. Texture of sour cream and a squeeze of lemon. — 4 years ago

Give Peach a Chance Peach Wine

One of my favorite wines. Very fruity. Kinda of sweet with a nice punch! Actually discovered at the actual winery Auburn orchards. My husband and I went for an anniversary. A great night, great wine! Was a really good time! — 5 years ago

Voglar Alto Adige Sauvignon 2015

Stunningly good cool climate SB. Crystalline and pure, zippy and intense minerality. Great weight, styled like a classic Sancerre or Pouilly Fume. Long elevage. Chestnut and acacia. Vineyards sit on the slopes above apple orchards. Very steep terrain. Phoenollically ripe. Delicious. — 5 years ago

Special Club Brut 1er Cru Champagne Blend 2012

A pretty light gold color with sparse, tiny bubbles. The nose is instantly attractive with lemon peel and unmistakable chalk up front. The fruit here is pretty amazing with honeydew, pears, and a touch of mango. Green and red apples sing throughout, especially as the glass warms a bit. Floral accents are the showstopper here with pretty white flowers and delicate orchards. It’s all so very fresh with this wine, as befits a Hebrart champagne.

I’m a huge fan of all of the Special Club bottles that I’ve had the pleasure to try. This is easily one of the best. 55/45 PN/CH primarily from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Masterfully crafted, this is both sleek and comforting. Beautiful purity of fruit and laser like focus. Nice acidity, not racy or bracing but smooth. There’s an incredible level of depth here. Tasted blind, no doubt I would have named a much more expensive bottle.

The attack is focused with much clarity. It’s almost hard to put into words why this is so damn good but trust me, it is. A wave of tropical fruits like pineapple and kumquat along with more mangoes. Bread with a light dusting of cinnamon is a pleasant surprise to with dried herbs. Cherries begin to come into view on the long finish and you’re left smiling by the trace of warm spice. Normally I would say let these sit for a few years but don’t bother, this sexy thing is singing right now.

Campo Delle Piane

La Meridiana Boca 1984

That color 😍 Initial stank quickly faded into sweet red berries and florals (transporting me to dewy orchards, images of raindrops on roses and more of my favorite things, etc). The potent acidity keeps the fruit surprisingly fresh and vibrant for its age - yes there’s loads stewed black cherry in there, but also some underripe red berries and tamarind paste, finishing with tarragon and a long chalky/mineral-laced finish. Elegant and tight
-lipped. If this is what 36 can be, bring on 2021!

Domaine Roulot

L'Abricot Liqueur

This was amazing. I’ve never had anything like it. The story told to me about this liquor is that the fruit comes from old old orchards on or near the Chave estate. Apricot trees used to be a big crop for the region a long time ago! this is a sublime drink — 5 years ago

Pegasus Bay

Waipara Valley Pinot Noir 2019

F-ing delightful, Pegasus, take me away. Well first let the Pegasus catch its breath (aka let the vino breath), then hop on. Smells a little earthy as a winged horse is want to be, but take sip and the steed takes flight. Fly through hella raspberry…orchards? Descend enough to grab those and some cherries fresh off the tree then accelerate through a tunnel of (politefully chill) oak barrels and chill. Oh! But this flight didn’t have turbulence rather (abandoning metaphor) it is supes silky but while it punches with fruit and pepper it then smooths itself across your tongue like a lace tablecloth. Aka achieves smoothness with texture and the flavors and sensations seem to pop all over my tongue prior to my hopping on my metaphorical pegasus who is (describing the finish) descending into a cherry orchard (not just cause I’m doing a stage reading of Chekhov’s “Cherry Orchard” soon) and lovingly (as lovingly as a creature with wings and hooves can) sending me to find my way back through the barrels to who knows? It’s like I’m Alice in Wrinkle in Time-land. Cool Pinot from NZ I’d like to take another flight on a different Pegasus Air line. Just to see. — 3 years ago
