Tierra Serena

Reserva de la Tierra

Satis Dei Exclusive Art Collection Syrah Garnacha 2023

Deep purple in color; black cherries, plums, and cigar box on the nose; medium plus acidity; high tannins; tastes like plum sauce, blueberries, and wet slate with a long finish. Nellie didn't like it, but I did. — 19 days ago

Tierra Alta Vineyard Syrah 2004

Blue and black fruit aromas and flavors, rich but not overripe, nicely balanced, color shows some browning, this seems mature, should hold for a few more years at least, long finish. — 5 months ago

So, I last had this TEN years ago, and speculated that it was mature then, but I obviously underestimated its staying power!!

Bodega Cauzón (Ramón Saavedra)

Cauzón Vino de la Tierra Norte de Granada Tempranillo Merlot

Medium to light body. Spicy, cherry, light tannins to start. As it opens, spiciness increases and raspberry emerges. — 10 days ago

Viña Tridado

Puerta de Plata Reserva de La Tierra Catalunya Tempranillo Garnacha

TJ. Absolutely delicious. Much lighter than expected. Fruit forward, lots of vanilla, a lil jammy, simple, easy to drink. A lil Smokey on the nose, Ben and Mere both really enjoyed! Would and will buy again. — a month ago

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

2016 was a stand-out year, and this wine reflected that. We could easily have given this another 8 years: it was tight and wild when we opened it, but by the time we had it with dinner, two hours later, it was a powerful and delightful experience. Some tannins had dropped out but it was still grippy, and the fruit had deepened into something wonderful with traces of fig. And that acidity: oh my it was wonderful with our salmon and with some Wagyu. I think one of our guests found the right technical term to capture it: yum. — 6 months ago

Gemini Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2012

Poured into a decanter about three hours prior to dinner. The 2012 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears and no obvious signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with heavy notes of Morello cherry, exotic spices, bergamot, black tea, red flowers, cola nut and stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. This is a remarkable 2012 Riserva that hides its 15% alcohol about as good as any I have encountered. Full of character and full of life. My last bottle, but I hope to encounter this beauty again at some point in the future. Drink now through 2032. — a month ago

Jonata Winery

Tierra Santa Ynez Valley Sangiovese 2018

This wine has a medium ruby hue (trending deep in color) with robust and layered aromas and flavors that include strawberry sauce (think fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt), raspberry coulis, tart cherry, rose water, tomato leaf, mint, black licorice, anise, vanilla, and pipe tobacco.

On the palate, it’s dry, with medium (+) acidity, a medium body, medium alcohol (13%) and medium fine grained, soft tannins.

It’s a delicious and versatile wine. And fun to taste a California expression of Sangiovese outside of its homeland in Italy!

Is the alcohol really only 13%? Aside from some of the Hilt wines, I can’t say I recall a Jonata wine under 14.

@Daniel veit I double checked and indeed it was 13% ABV. Must have been a cooler year or perhaps an earlier harvest … it was still ripe & certainly delish on the aroma and flavor front!

Bodegas Mano a Mano

Vino de la Tierra de Castilla Tempranillo

Had the 2019 in June of 2024. Really tasty wine. Dark fruits- black cherry jam with some black berry and red currants. Oak presence adds vanilla with a hint of licorice. Big wine- 14.5 ABV but was really tasty. Enjoyed and would buy again. — 6 months ago
