Webb Winery Of Hermitage

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Hermitage Syrah 1990

An explosive supple nose with rose, hints of tar, gnarly intense fruit in the middle. Fresh and powerful still. Spectacularly complex. Iron and salinity on the finish. Wow — 9 days ago

Hermitage Blanc Marsanne Roussanne 2015

Where do I begin… this wine is stunning.

It is positively golden in color with concentrated notes of caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, creme brûlée, dried apricot, yellow apple, peach, nectarine, yellow cherry, kumquat, baked quince, lemon curd, honeysuckle, butter cream, lavender,, dried herbs, fennel, beeswax, honey, chamomile, hazelnut, praline, honey, & wet stones…

It’s textured!!! Waxy & mouth coating, full bodied, round, & opulent.

Alcohol is high at 14.5% ABV — it’s warming but balanced and integrated with the deeply rooted flavors and elevated, vibrant acidity. Yum!!!!!

@Dave Clinton It was! The opposite of a patio pounder 😂 as much as we love those, too. But damn, it was a wine to sip and savor slowly.

Amazingly fresh and vivid. Seems at least 5 (or 10?) years younger….!!
One of the most impressive examples of how White Hermitage could age.
Marvelous…!!! 🤪

I initially expected more based on vintage + producer, but also have to keep context in focus that this is Crozes-hermitage.

Followed over two days and very little changed.

I’m surprised at saying that after 48hrs for a C-H…I think this is in a weird phase/shut down. Powerful/heady aromatics (black fruits, olive, espresso). ABV pokes out a bit up front. Good mid-palate weight with peppered dark fruits, herbs and some iron before a curtain of tannin shuts this down hard. Undeniably Syrah at the finish with a rusticity I normally find in Cornas…dark florals, spice, graphite and some charcoal. A serious and structured C-H.

@Jay Kline, I agree with all your comments, I think 1989/1990 were the last great “old school” Jaboulet (I’ve opened 3 1989 La Chappelle’s the last year, and every bottle has been fabulous. Nothing else to add to your exhaustive recounting of the fall/rise of this producer since 1990 or so.

Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2020

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two days and frankly, this was spectacular throughout. The 2020 pours a deep, ruby-purple with an opaque core and a magenta rim; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine smells like walking into a European delicatessen; developing with notes of mostly ripe and some tart, black, red and blue fruits. There’s mixed brambles, fig, blueberry, lavender, black pepper, olive brine, a melange of cool and warm baking spices and rocky earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. It’s been a couple of years since I last enjoyed this vintage of Graillot and it remains absolutely brilliant. Drink now through 2040. — 10 days ago

Les Trois Chênes Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2020

Youthful medium-dark color, great red and blackfruit aromas and flavors, excellent balancing acidity, still shows quite a bit of structure, but tannins are not harsh, I’d guess 3-5 more years of further aging is merited, but it may last much longer than that, long, lingering finish, excellent Crozes!! — a month ago

Monier de La Sizeranne Hermitage Syrah 2016

2016 vintage. Last tasted 06.10.22 (9.4). Medium-heavy body now. Decanted and tasted after 30 mins. A slight amount of sed. Earth, shrooms, motor oil, fudge, dark plum and gaminess all there for the taking. Just starting to stretch its legs out. 05.22.25. — 2 months ago
