Gerhard Markowitsch

Ried Rosenberg Red Blend 2018

A real charmer, full of dark, ripe, sweet berries, a pinch of spice, some kirsch, a whiff of gingerbread. Very sexy.
On the palate this is medium bodied, round, smooth, velvety with ripe dark fruit, a hint of dark chocolate nibs, with a fresh, herby note, juicy acidity and a very smooth, long finish. The alc (14% alc) is slightly noticeable but overall this is a true crowd pleaser!
Perfect for Valentines Day 😉

Delectus

Knights Valley Cabernet Franc 2009

So, I’m of the opinion that Gerhard Reisacher’s sweet spot is Cabernet Franc. This 2009 isn’t quite as good as his 2007 - that is the best 100% cab franc I’ve ever had - but this is damn close. No trace of the bell pepper you typically get from people picking the fruit too early, this is a terrific wine with notes of something reminiscent of roasted chipotle pepper, black pepper, and currant. Medium-to-full bodied palate with a silky, mouthfilling feel leading to a lingering finish. This is nothing like a cab franc from The Loire - pure California - but a terrific wine nonetheless. Winemakers would do well to take lessons from Gerhart on how to handle this varietal. — 4 years ago

Spring Mountain District Petite Sirah 2008

From Gerhard Reisacher’s now defunct Delectus winery (actually, the winery might still be active, but he’s long gone and has his own excellent eponymous label out of Knight’s Valley), this is drinking quite well! — 4 years ago

Carnuntum Cuvée Zweigelt 2018

Solid, but not memorable. Some green vegetable notes the first day, but on second and third days it was more pristine and elegant. — 4 years ago

Niederösterreich Rosé 2017

A fine happy hour pick. This had tannic grip. Not a pushover, and benefited from food. Second day it had alcohol dominance. — 5 years ago
