Art Of The Cooper

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Chardonnay 2013

My last bottle of 2013 Art Series Chardonnay. This remains one of the top Chardonnays in Australia together with Giaconda and Bindi Quartz Block for mine. As per previous note aromatics of white peach and cashew together with mealy notes. Not as full bodied as other Art Series but certainly doing well at 13 years of age. I often identify a dried pear character and this has hints of that. 98 points from James Halliday. — 10 days ago

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Shiraz 2020

Nicely aromatic & restrained (for Australia) with purity of dark fruit (blackberries, plums, mulberry), nice depth and excellent tannins quality - juicy, polished, finely grained.
Very elegant & with beautiful balance between the ripeness & savoury notes.
A really lovely wine!

Bindi

Quartz Macedon Ranges Chardonnay 2020

Aromatics of struck match, lime and grapefruit - on the palate a surprising luscious texture. Overall there is fruit and mineral intensity. A fabulous new World Chardonnay - one of Australia’s best. A few years ago I conducted a blind tasting of 2015 Chardonnays which included all of Australia’s best like Giaconda and Leeuwin Art Series and a Premier Cru white burgundy just to make things interesting - the consensus winner on the day was the Bindi Quartz. — 2 months ago

The gentle nose shows bright citrus, yellow peach, dried pear, and hint of crush nuts. On the palate it’s concentrated yet vibrant, with round acidity, spice and orange blossom, balanced by lively mineral drive and a long, lingering finish that meshes power with poise.

It’s bold and expressive, with a dynamic tension and savoury complexity that feels both immediate and age-worthy. At this young age, I like it better than the Art Series.

Doug's Vineyard-Romsey Pinot Noir 2018

Wow, this is a big pinot with a marvellous tannin.
Bright and quiet vibrant.
There's leather, cinnamon, forest floor, musk.
White pepper, very floral, a blueberry with raspberries around. The green balsamic side is a delicate Thai mint rather than a straightforward eucalyptus. Tobacco leaves and more notes given by the very present oak component.
I trust this wine will find a better harmony on the sweet side in a while, perhaps when the tannin will soften.
However this is very different vest from the 19s and the 17s., more complex already and even though I believe this wine will age gracefully for a bit I find it already on a secondary stage compared to the formers. I am very fascinated, it reminded of a Vosne from Dom. Laurent.
Long after taste, excellent!

If you haven't tried it yet I highly recommend it. To me he is in that little group of great young producer like Sami-Odi or Lucy Margaux. Plenty of character and flavour. 🙏

Vasse Felix

Heytesbury Margaret River Chardonnay 2016

Pale yellow in colour. Aromatics of Smoky Citrus rind. The medium bodied palate shows ripe grapefruit with citric acid toning down at 10 years of age. This is one of the best Chardonnays in Margaret River - up there with Leeuwin Estate Art Series without the latter wine’s ripe pear and white peach. This is a brilliant Chardonnay by any measure. My first of 3 bottles. 98 points from HH. — a month ago

@Bob McDonald, unfortunately when we visited Vasse Felix in 2023, I hadn’t seen your comments on this cuvée, so we didn’t taste it. Obviously, my loss. . . .

@Doug Powers Yes it is a producer that has had many successes. The first vines In Margaret River planted in the 1960’s?by Dr Tom Cullity; a highly skilled long serving winemaker in Virginia Willcock and the vast financial resources of the owners, the wealthy Holmes-a-Court family.

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Sunday Lunch with Roast Lamb. Deep Ruby in colour - very dense. A very Margaret River Cabernet - nose with herbs and a little mint. Barb thought a bit of capsicum (bell pepper) on the nose. On the medium bodied balanced palate the tannins are quite soft yet persistent. Leeuwin Estate better known for its outstanding Art Series Chardonnay has been working hard with the red varieties and it shows. — 9 months ago

I had the chance to taste couple older vintages (01 and 03) and was quite impressed. While price for the Chard is approaching $100 here, the Cab is still very reasonably priced. @Bob McDonald .

@Ming L Yes, the pricing differential between the 2 Cuvées is much the same here in Australia.

Idisma Drios Drama Assyrtiko 2020

@Delectable Wine this is the 2020 Idisma Drios Assyrtiko white wine. Waxy lemon and cream with subtle hints of ocean air on the nose. Palate is mineral driven with a tangy salt, pithy lemon and hints of creamy vanilla coating the palate. Bold and precise with the creamy hints give the palate just enough of a break from the bold acidity. Absolutely beautiful. — 4 years ago

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2003

The estate once belonged to the famous Lynch family, of Irish origin, acquired by Jean-Charles Cazes in 1934. His grandson, Jean-Michel Cazes restructured the estate in 1974, with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment. Primarily Cab Sauv, with Merlot, Cab Franc & Petit Verdot in the blend. Deep Ruby, complex nose, aged well, round berry fruit flavors, blackberry and plum with an oak character, elegant with soft tannins, a delicious wine ending with delicate fruit, oak and mineral notes.
