Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 2010

Classic Barolo via the stellar 2010 vintage (now +15 yrs). Medium / pale garnet and pours to a transparent center. Pop-and-pour to taste, with a much needed 2-hour decant to follow. Bone dry, high tannin and medium+ acidity, just like I like it. Tons of dark red fruit; this is drinking exceptionally well now, but would certainly benefit from 10-15+ more years in the cellar as the nose continues to develop. The finish is long / strong and heavily structured; simply a gorgeous expression of the Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva! — 7 hours ago

Bricco Ambrogio Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

“Bricco Ambrogio” stands alone as the only MGA in the tiny commune of Roddi and it’s almost completely under vine. In fact, the most prominent geological feature in Roddi is the hill of Bricco Ambrogio. While the Lodali family were the first to bottle a single expression, back in the late 1970’s, we largely have Paolo Scavino to thank for the growth of its reputation as a source of depth and balanced Barolo over the last 20+ years.

The 2020 “Bricco Ambrogio” pours a bright, luminous garnet color; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing and predominately red fruited with notes of Morello cherry, cranberry, raspberry, rosebushes, tar, dried green herbs, cedar chest, spices, and gravely earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finishes long, grippy and spicy. A lovely Bricco Ambrogio with beautiful balance and sneaky power; arguably the benchmark for the MGA. Drinking well now in its youth (thank you 2020) but will surely gain complexity after 2030 and deliver smiles through 2040+.

Enrico Scavino Barolo Nebbiolo 2018

Medium Ruby with aromas of red fruits, floral and new leather notes, fruit sources from several vineyard sites. On the palate flavors of cherry and plum fruits with tobacco and pepper spice. Firm chewy tannins, savory on a medium+ finish ending with notes of oak, mineral and earthy character. Drinking well now, good value. — 2 months ago

Prapò Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

Prapò may not be particularly well known but its location in Serralunga d’Alba, directly below Cerretta, should be a good indication of its quality and potential. That being said, there are only a half dozen producers making Prapò today.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of several hours. The 2020 pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with a mix of tart and ripe, predominately red fruits: raspberries, Maraschino cherries, strawberry, along with whole peaches, roses, green herbs, stony minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. The orchard peach character shows a bit more prominently here while the rest of the palate seems a bit taciturn, maybe even austere. The finish is medium+. Quite a treat, if not a touch cerebral. Drink now with patience through 2040.

Technically perfect. Too perfect and “pushed”. It Probably needed longer oxygenation. — 2 months ago

Bric dël Fiasc Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two hours. The 2019 “Bric dël Fiasc” pours a beautiful garnet with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose wine is developing with notes of tart and ripe, red (mostly) and black fruits: raspberries, Maraschino cherry, underripe strawberries, cranberries, pomegranate, freshly cut sod, dried green herbs, talcum powder, and dried gravelly earth. On the palate the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, zippy and grippy. A beautiful Bric dël Fiasc that has a long life ahead. Drinking well now and should continue to do so through 2044, easy. — 2 months ago

I have always loved wines from Cannubi. Just plain damn good. Soft tannins and ready to drink. Had fresh shrimp for dinner but now enjoying this with salt water taffy. What a pairing — 5 months ago
