Drank beautifully even after 3 days. A little high alcohol for my Pinot Noir preferences. Spicy, oak influenced, a bit bossy of this wine were human. Sassy too. — 6 years ago

Monte Rosso Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1981

Always a pleasure to taste well aged mountain Cabernet from the historic Monte Rosso vineyard, and even better with some of that red volcanic dust on my boots, dark color for its age, still tart with plenty of that earthy spice that is the hallmark of this vineyard. What a joy! — 8 years ago

Hartford Court

Far Coast Vineyard Chardonnay 2015

The DL reference point for whites is @David L, so I’m very interested to hear his thoughts on this excellent example.
I compared it to the Aubert UV-SL (2014) that David brought to the mini WNH pizza gathering - which was spellbinding. From memory, I rated that 97. This is no UV-SL, but it gets damn close. It’s truly stunning with a nose of almonds, brioche and marzipan. The mouthfeel is dense, and exudes a near oily viscosity. Notes on the palate are consistent with the nose, although wifey detects ripe peaches. The oak is in the background and supports the components extremely well. Finishes with balance, grace and sweetness. For $65, this is a “fill yer boots” opportunity..

This was the older sibling at the table. A little bossy, serious and confident. Elegant focused nose and a slightly austere palate . Kept opening with air. Full of freshness. — 9 years ago

Diamond Creek Vineyards

Volcanic Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

A Thanksgiving miracle! Was so worried that this bottle corked by the staining on the cork, but is all ended well! The fruit is barely there on this bottle from my favorite vineyard (Volcanic Hill) from Diamond Creek. Still an immense presence and complexity after decanting for 4 hours. Time had made this bottle a little more delicate than the others, but unmistakable Diamond Creek. Glasses were raised to Al and Boots as the vineyard has now been bought by Roederer. I believe it is in food hands. — 6 years ago

A producer that really shines with this kind of age. Love their work in the 80’s & 90’s.

I dig this guy. New leather, like unworn cowboy boots dominates the nose. There is some softness of rich forest floor and a whiff of vanilla. Delicate, easy, some umami. Brighter tartier berries like blueberry and blackberry. Would be good cologne. — 8 years ago

Tar and roses up the wazoo. Powerful tannins and good acid left my tongue shaking in its boots. Concentrated cherries and dark berries, dried currants, wet earth. Delicious. From Flatiron Wines. — 9 years ago

Viña Cubillo Crianza Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2012

Cubillo is a beautiful anomaly in a sea of $25 wines.

It’s the youngest of the lot, but the signature stamp is there, so obviously LDH Tempranillo.

Velvet milk chocolate, ripe black cherries, brand new leather boots. Rich and loaded with cocoa and coffee and raisiny red berries.

It looks like motor oil. Heck it has almost a decade in bottle. Plenty of acid to smooth out over time.

We should be stock piling this - quality and price don’t intersect so well very often.

Boots Grenache 2002

Here is a nicely aged Australian Grenache for #AgedWineTuesday.

Ruby in color with a wide reddish rim and medium intensity.

Great nose of blueberries, cherries, licorice, citrus, cedar, leather, light vanilla, tobacco, chocolates and black pepper.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and nice long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, light vegetables, earth, cedar, vanilla, leather, spices, dark coffee, dark chocolates and black pepper.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a great surprise. I did not see that coming. This Australian Grenache tastes like an aged Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Great Complexity with a nice mouthfeel.

Good by itself or with food. Good right out of the bottle and better after 30 minutes of airtime.

This 18 year old is soft, smooth and elegant. Tasty and interesting.

I paired it with lamb chops and heavy appetizers.

15% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

Barolo Chinato Nebbiolo

Ruby. Prune. Dried fruit. Christmas fruitcake aroma. Sweetly, fir herbaceous. Out of town for holidays. Stamping snow from boots. Deeply winter. Jingle bells. Slush of ice- sled on melting snow. So just the teeny hint of the medicinal. Yet so fine. So- healing. Soothing. Earthy. In the old forest. Rough bark. Fox, the very edge of the eye- imagined? Away so fast. All of this. In just a few sips. Isn’t that a marvel? — 8 years ago
