Beautifully mature-looking but still not fully mature Volnay Santenots, with an expansive, confectionery nose of mid-season cherry, a faint touch of caramelized cherry, desiccated leaves, citrus peel, moss and beautifully precise wet earth. The aromatics are the star, already operating closer to 9.6 or 9.7, with terrific definition and that muscular Santenots character beginning to soften into something more layered and elegant. The palate is concentrated and dense, with excellent inner-mouth aromas, layered tannins and very good freshness, though the tannins became a little more assertive with air before settling back down. Fantastic wine at twenty years old, but still carrying enough structure that I would not call it fully mature. — 16 hours ago

“Clos de la Barre” is a lieu dit monopole that has been owned by the Lafon family since 1894.

Opened sometime prior to dinner. The 2018 “Clos de la Barre” pours a pale straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with apples, pineapple, white flowers, a whiff of matchstick, lemon, and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and creamy. A really pretty wine. Perhaps even a little shy tonight. Quality is unquestionably high. Drink now through 2038. — a month ago

98 was not a great vintage and why Giacosa bottled the SS as a red label has long been a bit of a mystery. There’s a lot in this wine to like, and no reason to leave it sitting in the cellar. Fully mature, ample bricking, softer but still lively fruit, rich mouthfeel with classic sous bois, a bit of iron, red berry and herbal overlay, and soft maybe a bit overripe tannin. Lovely, but not near Giacosa’s most memorable SSRs. — 3 months ago

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of several hours. The 2021 pours a pale straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tropical fruit, lemon drop, freshly struck match, Spring white tree flowers, and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+, textured and saline. I thought this benefitted from a lot of air as my last glass was my favorite but this was pretty awesome from the PnP.
