What a great find: a robust California pinot with finesse and style. This has all the hallmarks of new world Pinots, with a nice brushy nose, rich red fruit taste, and depth to balance a food-friendly acidity and brightness. Go roast some salmon and enjoy! — a year ago

I've hit the last 4 out of 5 weekly wine committees and it has been a treat every time. This week, @Jeff Meyer hosted and schooled everyone on how good German wines can be!

I guessed Pinot Noir on all 4 reds...I got 3 correct, but missed this one. Very unique! Had some more world/RRV characteristics in the cedar/brushy undertones. — 7 years ago

2019 vintage. Picked up at Trader Joe’s-La Mesa, CA. $14.99. Popped and poured without any down time. This came out swinging. Great, expressive nose of the usuals-like tar, rose petals and slightly tart cherry-with a brushy, decaying leaves undercurrent. Medium body. Lacking the unbridled power of the top Barolo efforts on the back end but it was still a 25+ seconds finish with a dusting of cracked black pepper regardless. Expected a lot less and received much more. Very pleasant balance of fruit and tannins currently without any particular component/moment stealing the show. Not to be dismissed, intro and mid-palates amply represented. Will go back this week for more. 14% ABV. 1.23.24. — 10 months ago

2016 vintage - There was a time when I was new to tasting Gamay when I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to distinguish its character from a lesser Pinot Noir.... year of trying and wines like this and NOW I CAN. There’s an extra “wood/brushy” aspect to this wines fruit aromas; like a red plum with some stem still attached. Brilliant transparent fruit like cherry and plum with hints of cinnamon spice and brush. So fresh in the mouth, extra drinkable...Very well made! Bravo! — 7 years ago

Cherry and plum fruit notes carry it. Surrounded by herbal, brushy notes with licorice hitting the upper palate mid-profile. Before opening it had more tar and cedar; after a few hours herbal notes have strongly developed. Medium-plus to strong-minus sandy tannins. — a year ago

2019 Cote du Py By far the best Gamay Noir I have tasted in several years. Such a precise expression of Morgon. This aroma shows the perfect combination of deep and inviting cherry plum fruitiness along with the slightest brush pepperiness and subtle meaty/earthy hints. There is no funky Brett in this wine that I can find. Not squeaky clean commercial either. There is no mistaking the pedigree of this vineyard site as well as the deft hand of this legendary producer. The texture is pure pleasure, almost nil tannins (The way I like it), and major length. Woody, brushy (rotundones) are combined with perfectly ripe tree fruit and alluring minerality . For anyone confused about the distinction between Burgundy and Beaujolais this should stand as a model example. Bravo bravo bravo!!! — 3 years ago
