Corte A Red Blend 2019

Difficult but I gave it the benefit of the doubt…at opening a total disappointment, after an hour ok’ish, after 3 hours wow and at the end quite close again. I guess time in the cellar will tell? @Dave listening to George Michael — 7 days ago

Nice and light, great berries and definitely pepper. Really great easy drinking yet quite interesting light red. Could not find a vintage anywhere though… NV?? — 10 months ago

Do not scoff. If grapes find it home and come from their homeland, they will always sing a beautiful song of love and sorrow. Even though it might be not an epic piece — 5 years ago

Corte Sant'Alda

Ca' Fiui Valpolicella Corvina Blend 2022

Unnecessarily heavy bottle. Nose is quite vinous, showing bright winey berries and cherry licorice candy, along with a whiff of almond paste. The palate is vigorous but bright and fresh, with nice depth. Tangy acids and a little metallic/mineral note in the slightly bitterish finish. It’s got the “cleansing” character that pairs well with casual, tomato-saucy Italian dishes. I could be wrong but I’m guessing that this has no slightly dried grapes in it nor was any appasimento technique used. Just fresh ripe grapes. — 11 days ago

Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2005

This is the best bottle of wine I’ve had from my cellar in years. Nearly perfect. Bought it in 2008 for $30 and one of my great finds. Good lord it was just divine. I’m sure there have been better vintages but I can’t imagine it. — 3 months ago

Didn’t even need a decant, this babe was ready to go the second I popped the cork. This was all dried blackberries and dark plum with sturdy tannins begging for a rack of lamb. — 6 years ago

Imperial Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2019

Presented to me double-blind at Tasting Group. The wine pours a deep ruby/purple with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart black fruits: black cherry, plum, some cocoa, dry leaf tobacco, vanilla and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. The alcohol is medium. This is tart and tasty; young and built for age.

Initial conclusions: this could be Cabernet Sauvignon (or a blend including Bordeaux varieties), Zinfandel (with a decent amount of Petite Sirah, Tempranillo or even Malbec from France, the US, Spain or Argentina. But I think the wood is playing a key role in the tannin here, meaning that I think it spends a lot of time on it. I don’t think it’s all American because it don’t get a bunch of coconut and dill…but this is probably a modern leaning Rioja. So that’s my call. This is Tempranillo from Spain, Rioja, Reserva level and younger, 2019. Boom. This is solid and reliable even though I don’t think it has the personality of Heredia or Pescina. Drink now through 2049.

Tonight the wine I have opened is the Moët & Chandon 150th Anniversary Imperial Brut Champagne. The blend is 30-40% Pinot Noir, 30-40% Pinot Munier and 20-30% Chardonnay.

On the nose there is buttery brioche, creme brulee, lemon curd, yeasty bread, hazelnut and apricot.

On the palate there is creamy lemon curd, tropical fruits, pineapple, brioche, hazelnut and a minerality.

This wine is medium bodied with medium + to high acidity that leads into a long toasty citrus finish. Today is the day we spring ahead and so we all lose an hour of our weekend. So what time we have left to the weekend try to enjoy yourselves and please be safe doing so. Nostrovia! 🥂🥂🥂🥂
