Les Opales Chablis Chardonnay 2023

We have lunch with our friend who lives 25 km away and his sons. It's a repeat of last week's stay in the lot region as they were with us.
No real note as we are all together. Nice chalky nose with lemon. Good acid drive. Perfect with squid salad as an entrée.

— 3 years ago

Ultreia Saint Jacques Mencía

A nice example of a fairly obscure varietal. It worked better with my tuna entrée than with Bonnie’s rack of lamb. I think it needs a bit more aging. — 4 months ago

Domaine Des Versauds Morgon Gamay 2018

Dark garnet purple. Inviting nose and medium palate of black cranberry and red apple. Medium tannins and juicy medium plus acidity from entry to moderate finish. Cru Beaujolais is either BeauJo Nouveau’s more serious or Burgundy’s more rustic cousin and this one offers an affordable entrée into the genre for those who enjoy either. A great everyday red that will accompany a wide range of red wine fare. Drink now. — 3 years ago

Domaine des Huards (Michel Gendrier)

Envol Cheverny Pinot Noir et Gamay Blend 2018

PN Gamay Blend #1: A nice biodynamic juice that honours the pinot noir, (by bringing a classy mouth) and the gamay, generous and flowery. The dress is dark but translucent. Open nose, very fruity. In the mouth the material is velvety, combining freshness and roundness, in a balance that makes this wine remarkable in its price range. Nice entry cuvée by an interesting domain of Loire region.

Royal Oporto (Real Companhia Velha)

Carvalhas Douro Branco 2021

Star bright yellow gold. Inviting nose of quince and white pepper. Medium full palate confirms the nose adding an earthy mineral (at once) note all supported by firm (medium plus) acidity. White rose(!) on the lengthy, palate continuing finish. This 50/50 blend of Gouvelo and Voisinho makes an excellent upper entrée into Portuguese whites; a category most have yet to explore. It's a great pair for roasted fowl or pork and of course most Iberian fare. Drink now through 2026. — 10 months ago

Badia a Coltibuono Vin Santo del Chianti Classico

Wonderful entrée into vin santo, rich and concentrated but still light, vibrant, and etherial, macadamia, chestnut, carmel, maple syrup, fresh fruit. — 2 years ago

Bevan Cellars

Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay 2018

Slightly hazy (unfined?) gold. Abundant nose of honeyed tropical fruits, baked apple, and vanilla tinged orange crème. Full-bodied palate of cooked pineapple, baked apple, hint of orange, yellow lilies, and… how does one say “baseball bat” only subtly? Another quintessential Russell Bevan white that’s a monster in body, but velvet on the palate. A big wine that begs for big, complex dishes. My drinking partner (who suggested the wine was like an Adele song… you think it’s going to be a rustic stumble, but it clearly has much more going on) made an incredible pork loin, root vegetable, and apple entrée that was right where a dish should be to stand up to this wine. Similar dishes will work. Not your grandmother’s Chardonnay. Drink now through 2023. — 3 years ago
