Popped and poured into red Solo cups; enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The 2001 pours a garnet/purple with an opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of cassis, black berries, black cherry, dried purple flowers, capsicum, pencil shavings, some fine, cool and warm spices and dry, gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Squarely in the zone and while this a traditional Bordeaux-style blend, it somehow has a touch of Italian vibes. Drink now through 2036. — 9 days ago

Great to have an Etna wine from time to time. I have read in the past that this is like an Italian Burgundy and I agree in many respects. Medium weight, earthy with bags of minerality, ultra savoury with a lovely red fruited perfume. 100% Nerello Mascalese. We have fond memories of visiting Sicily (including Etna) approx 7 or 8 years ago with Peter Scudamore-Smith MW. — a month ago

Tuscan Villa on the label. Looks opulent. Wine is a pretty color. Garnet. Aroma is rose hip tea, hibiscus drinks and damask rose. Flavors are nice. Floral and sensuous. Maybe a bit flinty. Fruit driven, but not sweet. Cherry pits. Hint of Russian black currant and cherry flavored tea. Nice cedar streak. Hint of fresh ground pepper corns. This has character. It’s a great deal for such a defined Sangiovese. — 4 months ago
