Domaine François Buffet

Clos Micot Pommard 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2021

Lyle Fass
9.5

As usual with this 1er cru at Buffet the nose is stunning. Mid season cherries, dust, minerals, flowers and smoke. Holding back some but what is there is so detailed and expressive. What a palate. Which now is ahead of the nose. Sleek and juicy with such a compactness to it. Like an orb. So elegant and lacey with top notch delicacy. Just so well balanced and classic. This is 21! Nose is now singing! So expressive. Layered and ebullient! Acid is so good and the energy is palpabale. — 2 years ago

Wow. This smoked in 17 and I knew it was going to smoke in 19 for this little known gem of a 1er Cru. Haunting nose of sweet mid season cherry fruit, sous bois, wet earth, desiccated leaves, flowers (violets?), citrus zest and so many other nuances. Just a zany great nose. It’s screaming “I am Volnay” in my nose. Yes my nose. Palate is OMG heaven. Silken, sweet and seductive. Awesome mid season cherry fruit and perfect balance. Haunting finesse and a sphere like roundness and then such freshness that keeps it alive and dancing on your tongue. Such lacey, sweet and delicate tannins. Truly special. Unreal purity. 2019 is the real deal. This is liquid cashmere. It is so finely knit. Will be back in an hour as it opens up. 9.5 for now. — 5 years ago

My first taste of Buffet since January! Right before the end of the year! Gorgeous nose. Mushroom, mint, Sous bois, mineral, very rocky, ripe but measured red cherries. Bright and deeply penetrating nose. Palate is elegant and loaded with lacey ripe and juicy tannins. Sweet fruit and so elegant. Wonderful Champans. Palate staining and sappy finish. So pure. Hit of licorice and darker fruits on the finish. So long. Juicy and so so delicate. Can be drunk young but also has structure to age for 15+ years. What a finish. As this aerates it gets more concentrated and gains depth. Stunning tiny berry sweet fruited intensity. — 6 years ago

What a nose. Singing! Huge red cherry fruit. So perfumed. Floral. A hint of earth and some mesmerizing spice. A nose one can smell over and over and over. It’s just insane. Juicy and complex with stunning acidity and freshness and a lacey, lean, silken structure. So elegant and such fine fine tannins. Amazingly long finish with awesome acidity and brilliant balance. Just a stunning, stunning wine. Such sweetness and sappiness all at the same time. Amazingly pure. While very good now this has a bright future. — 7 years ago

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2011

Roses, red fruits, tarragon, pomegranate molasses, red liquorice, touch of leather, rusty nails and slight earthy yeasty complexity. Medium plus acid. Medium just plus Lacey tannin. Doesn’t build. Amaro finish. — 8 years ago

Wow. What a nose. I love Riottes. What a nose. Glorious. Nutty, big cherry, spice, flowers, so aromatic. Perfumed. Even a sweetness. Gorgeous. Lacey and elegant palate with sap and deep dark cherry fruit. Terrific sweetness and grip. Very mineral and substantial. Even refined. Brilliant 11.! — 9 years ago

Domaine Bachelet

Vieilles Vignes Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir 2007

Opened at a restaurant half an hour before consumption. At first the nose is a bit reticent, but with time, it opens to lovely aromas of spice and red fruits. The palate is silky and lacey. The acidity still weaving a vibrancy to the flavors. Tannins are perfectly resolved. This is wonderful, mature Gevrey and why we age our wines. And it’s Bachelet! — 4 years ago

Castiglione Barolo Nebbiolo 2014

Surrounded by ripping vintages the 14 is often overlooked but this is a ripper. So lithe and pure. Florality, raw almond, red fruits, slight leather and anise. Lacey tannins and watery acidity. Ripper — 8 years ago

Lovely nose of wet earth, mineral, damson berry fruit, light color, very Pinot color, and very Pinot nose. Such finesse. Lacey and delicate with lively acidity and nice tart fruit. Big cherries here. So clean and clear. Almost evaporates on the palate. Terrific velvety and elegant tannins. Lovely showing. — 8 years ago

Les Champs Saint Martin Extra Brut Champagne Pinot Noir 2007

Great balance of weighty fruit/non-fruit character, textural richness, and bright acidity. So open knit and generous right now. Seamless. Deep stone fruit and baked pommaceous notes, zippy ripe citrus, lacey tones of nuts, flowers, honey, and brioche. Deeply mineral throughout. So delicious and perfect accompaniment with our meal. — 9 years ago

Small Hill Red Pinot Noir Blend 2020

Caramelized fruits on the nose -

A very smooth blend of Merlot, Spatburgunder, and St.Laurent.
Elegant and Lacey, unsweetened blueberry and cherry juices. Hint of jolly rancher acidity - tempered and drinking well.

Wonderful nose of spicey oak and intense minerality. Saline. Rock quarry vibes. Lemon pith lemon flesh with hints of sugar. So complex and appealing. Hint of butter and loads of salinity. Nose is just a wonderful perfume. 9.6 nose. Showing so well. Palate is juicy and tensile with a killer rich texture and ample freshness. Chewy and rocky with great finesse and some green apple fruit. Lacey, juicy and slippery. Amazing purity and balance here and almost finished with some dry tannins. Just awesome. Like a white burgundy liquid drop amuse bouche. — 4 years ago

Gorgeous nose. Mid season cherries, spice, mineral. Just opened and this needs at least an hour. Having it with dinner in a few hours. Palate is super. Lacey and so well in it with terrific finesse. Terrific inner mouth aromas. Complex and ethereal. Light as a feather but very substantial and builds spectacularly on the finish. Which is super long and flowing with cherries and minerals. Coats the palate. Brilliant and ephemeral. Will fill out over next two hours and get sweeter and more complex. Tannins are so refined. It’s almost like hi end Champagne. Stunning. My score will go up.

after 2 hours this goes 9.7. Sick. Sick.

Volnay Pinot Noir 2011

Bright, lifted, focused and almost lacey in its feel. Great charm and drinkability and true to place and vintage. Of course the hallmark crisp red fruits followed by a very mineral backbone. There’s lots of sous bois coming through, turned earth, beets, wet leaves, underbrush, forest floor, licorice and flowers. — 7 years ago

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2014

Perfumed, fresh, lifted. Considerable finesse to this wine, elegant with light extract and focused on purity. Nose is spiced; potpourri, cracked green peppercorns, herbs de Provence, menthol, bayleaf, dried flower petals. The fruit is lacey and somewhat brambly. Palate is savory in its spice and mineral notes. The tannins are youthful but show great finesse for how young this is and the vintage. — 9 years ago
