Estate Tannat de Corte 2019

Bodega Garzón – Tannat de Corte 2019
Maldonado – Uruguay 🇺🇾

Overview
80% Tannat, 12% Marselan, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot. A thoughtful estate blend from Uruguay’s flagship winery, Garzón, showcasing both structure and elegance.

Aromas & Flavors:
Dark plum, blackberry compote, and cassis with hints of cocoa, dried herbs, and a whisper of violet. The supporting grapes add depth: Marselan contributes juiciness, Cabernet Franc adds lift, and Petit Verdot layers in spice and grip.

Mouthfeel:
Concentrated and structured with firm tannins yet polished texture. Balanced acidity frames the fruit, giving the wine freshness alongside its power.

Food Pairings:
Perfect with grilled ribeye, lamb chops, or rich stews. Can also handle aged cheeses and charcuterie.

Verdict:
A benchmark for modern Uruguayan reds, bold yet refined. The Tannat is dominant, but the blend makes it more approachable and layered than a pure varietal bottling. Cheers!

Did You Know?
Uruguay is the only country in the world where Tannat is the national grape. Thanks to the Atlantic Ocean breezes in Maldonado, tannins here are more polished compared to their French counterparts from Madiran.

Tannat 2022

Heavy stuff.
Having the last glass on day 3. It's mellowed out quite a bit. Juicy mouthfeel, I taste and smell candy and nuts; my brain says Boston baked bean candy. It finishes with brooding, dark cherry and blueberry, with a little nutmeg. The tannins have chilled, but still leathery. I enjoyed it!

Bodega Garzón – Pinot Noir Single Vineyard 2016
Maldonado – Uruguay 🇺🇾

Overview:
From Uruguay’s coastal Maldonado region, Garzón has become a global ambassador for South American wines beyond Tannat. This single vineyard Pinot Noir reflects the cooling influence of the Atlantic breezes and the mineral-rich soils of the estate.

Aromas & Flavors:
Bright red cherry, cranberry, and wild strawberry, laced with floral notes of violets and subtle hints of spice and earth.

Mouthfeel:
Silky and balanced, with moderate acidity and a rounded structure. Freshness from the coastal terroir keeps the wine lively while allowing the fruit to shine.

Food Pairings:
Perfect with roasted chicken, mushroom-based pasta, grilled salmon, or a charcuterie plate with soft cheeses.

Verdict:
A refined expression of Pinot Noir that shows Uruguay can deliver elegance and complexity beyond its flagship Tannat. Structured yet approachable, with admirable freshness.

🍷 Personal Pick Highlight:
A standout Pinot Noir from South America’s rising star region, showcasing Garzón’s innovative spirit and Uruguay’s cool-climate potential.

What a fabulous wine from Uruguay! I’ve had the Cab Sauv but this is just as delicious. Very fruit forward and smooth. - Sandy’s Shack Imported Wine and Beer — 3 months ago

Reserva Cabernet Franc 2021

Another solid vintage of this Uruguayan Cabernet Franc. Dark purple color with violet highlights. Aromas of black fruit, tar, violets and poblano peppers. Flavors of ripe blackberry, prunes, bramble berries, pepper spice and dark chocolate. Hint of mint on the long and fruit forward finish. Firm and chalky tannins and medium bodied. Well balanced and complex. Well crafted. Solid QPR. Thanks for including in your Cab Franc Tasting, Ron B! Revisited in July 2025. Nice freshness! — 6 months ago

Proprietary Red Blend 2013

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Strong nose of black plums, currants, blackberries, licorice, light cedar, vanilla, toast, tobacco, chocolates, coffee and cola.

Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruit forward on the palate with blackberries, black currants, black plums, cedar, tobacco leaf, light earth, herbs, spices, licorice, vanilla, cola, peppercorn, chocolates and dark coffee.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This 12 year old red blend from Napa Valley is peaking now, and will continue to drink nicely in the next few years.

Complex, engaging and delicious after 60 minutes of airtime. I enjoyed the nose even more than the palate.

A great sipping wine that will also pair nicely with BBQ Meats.

14.6% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

Old Toll Road Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

2019 vintage is A truly gem, ready to go! A great representation Cab Sauv from Calistoga, Napa. Rich, bold and intense, yet crazy delicious! All raisins, baked figs, and tons of cured leather and tobacco leaf, it truly glides in your mouth. It screams cheese and charcuterie platters, and it is progressive, 90 mins after opening it shows it’s potential. Tannins were polished and had a comeback finish! — 8 months ago
