A bright ruby red. Black and blue fruits, Five spice and a tarry note. My last of 6 - and possibly the best. See my Delectable note in April 2022 for the first of 6. I am always in admiration of Andrew Caillard MW and his multiple talents when I look at this label which he painted. A beautiful expression of old vine Barossa Mataro (Mourvèdre). — 6 months ago
Blend of Grenache (65%), Shiraz (20%) and Mataro (15%). Bright garnet color with a ruby core. Aromas of red berries, dried violets, dried earth and cedar. Complex flavors of dried cherries and raspberries, red currants, black tea, Asian spices, black olives and tobacco. Long lasting savory and tangy finish. Silky texture, well balanced acidity and nicely integrated soft tannins. — 7 days ago
Incredibly light in color, crystalline and clear, but with surprisingly a bigger body than one would expect from looking at it, this is a very mature rose for being so young. It also required quite a bit of time to open up, being very austere at first, and needing at least 30 minutes to bloom. The nose is VERY complex. At first you come to it and its floral with a hint of citrus, and then it begins to evolve into honeycrisp or pink lady apple, some slightly ripe, almost meaty undertones, a mineral freshness polished it all off at the end. The palate is very dry, but not acidic, with a roundness and fullness to the body that’s surprising considering the color. Silky fruit and florals on the front, spreading out to a paper like dryness, that then evolves further into more candied, riper berry fruit. The mid-palate features some strangely vegetal notes, almost like celery, with a looong finish of fruit, like slightly underripe strawberry. Really one of the most complex roses I’ve had from the U.S. — a month ago
128-year-old Mataro vines grown in the sand in Contra Costa County, stunning redfruits, great freshness and lift from the lovely acidity, good balance, excellent depth, long finish, terrific Mataro!! — 4 months ago
I took this bottle from my cellar to a friend who just received his complete allocation of 2022 Wendouree. We obviously compared this 2011 Shiraz Mataro with the latest 2022. If this exercise proved one thing that was that any cuvée of Wendouree should not be opened at under 10 years of age. The 2011 had a gorgeous nose of blackberry, liquorice and spice…..intoxicating! Whereas the 2022 was as tight as a drum…giving very little. The palate was fluid and smooth with those same aromatics coming through on the palate with that amazing old vine opulence and persistence. I had my first bottle back in August 2022. Notes are here on Delectable. — a month ago
Dark fruits, oak, and herbs combine in this zin forward red blend. Great upon opening and excellent day 2. Not familiar with Mataro (only 5%) but blended to perfection. — a month ago
2021 is too young but I’m drinking it, and it’s delicious. — 3 months ago

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of three days. Best on Day 3 though, this was pretty tasty throughout. The 2023 Mataro CCC pours a pretty ruby/purple color with a magenta rim; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is youthful with notes of tart and ripe, black and red fruit: blackberries, raspberries, black pepper, dried thyme, gentle warm spices and wet gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. Fresh and full of life. An awesome pairing with lamb/beef kofta and tabouli. Drink now through 2038. — 13 hours ago
