Moulin Saint Hubert

This is my first experience w/ this producer. Reading…a family Domaine that started farming in 49 and made their first wines in 1980 if my short-term memory still works. Built it into 11 Hectares, which is fairly big in Burgundy and certainly so for a family Domaine.

This is one of my favorite vineyards. Particularly fond of Hubert Lamy’s work in this vineyard. The exception was 23, which I felt was too lean. I don’t buy Lamy anymore as when I first started buying it, it was around $50. Now, $160 for their 22. I bought my last two bottles in 22.

This 23 was a much better value at $59.

The nose is bursting w/ expression. Green apple, lime pulp w/ rind, Meyer lemon to meringue pie, kiwi, white stone fruit-peaches/nectarines, pineapple, green melons, honeysuckle, notes of butterscotch, touch of dry to moist herbs, some fresh mint leaves, frothed cream, saline, dry chalky powder to bits, understated white spice, volcanic minerals, dry limestone, yellow lilies, blooming jasmine with greens.

The palate is ripe, lush & cool stream like. Green apple, lime pulp w/ rind, Meyer lemon to meringue pie, kiwi, grapefruit, white stone fruit-peaches/nectarines, pineapple, green melons, honeysuckle, notes of butterscotch, some caramel, touch of dry to moist herbs, some fresh mint leaves, dry stem/twig, frothed cream, saline, dry to slightly dry chalky powder, white spice w/ just a touch of palate heat, volcanic minerals, dry limestone marl to powder, yellow lilies, blooming jasmine with greens, excellent to near perfect acidity, well balanced-structured, mid tension with an elegant finish that lasts nearly two-minutes and lands on volcanics & chalk powder.

I bought more when I finished my notes. This will improve a point in the next 3-5 yrs. In today’s white burgundy world, this at $59 is kind of a steal. 23 whites shining & over 22, which I love as well.

Château Laroze

Famille Meslin St. Émilion Grand Cru Merlot Blend 2020

2020 vintage. A rather obscure Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion, but it has been classified since the start of the classification in 1955. 27 hectares in one big plot, organically farmed. Hubert de Bouard consults since 2009. Merlot and Cabernet Franc with tiny amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. A solid effort with an attractive floral nose, good fruit concentration, soft tannin and a distinctive mineral finish. Terrific value. Abv 14%. — 4 years ago

Clos du Meix Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Chardonnay 2017

Discrete nose of white fruit with pears and also a slight minty and smoke feel, very discrete. The palate is gorgeous, such balance between the perfect acidity and slight richness of fruit and elegance. Another great 2017 CDB. 90-91

Nez discret de poires et une touche de menthe et de fumée mais sans déranger. Le vin est délicieux, quel équilibre entre cette tension appuyée et cette richesse de fruit, juste parfait. Un autre beau blanc 2017. 90-91 +

A property I have visited. This cuvée has traditionally been one off my favorites from this producer.

Not what I expected. First off vintage of the vineyard and producer I love. A bit too lean.

This was a bright, crisp, medium to medium-high acid French white burgundy that was a little less mineral than Chablis. $375 at Joujou, I preferred the champagne for $325. — 2 months ago

Opened and aerated. Bouquet of dry dirt cherry! initial taste of dry dusty cherries. Middle of old world dryness. Finishes with the medium dryness of dusty grapes. A great French wine. — 3 months ago

Thibault Liger-Belair

Vieilles Vignes Moulin-à-Vent Gamay 2016

One of my favorites in the in Bourguignon-style of Beaujolais are those of Thibault Liger-Belair. What I adore about Thibault’s approach is that his winemaking philosophy seems to suit M-à-V so well. Popped and poured; no formal notes. The 2016 “Moulin-à-Vent VV” is full of the undeniable dark fruit and structure and yet, incorporates a funky charm that seems to bridge Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaujolais perfectly. To my palate, these 2016 VV’s are just entering the early part of their drinking window. I still think this is developing and it will take another few years before the secondary characteristics begin to show and that’s when the magic really starts to show with these wines. All of the pieces and parts are there…all that is required at this point s a little more patience. Good now but better with a little patience and after 2026. Should be awesome well through 2036 — 3 years ago

Château de Fonbel

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

2015 vintage. Owned by the Vauthier family (Ausone, Moulin Saint Georges and La Clotte). A blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and interestingly 5% Carnenere and 5% Petit Verdot. Seriously reduced, I wildly double-decanted the wine, and struggled with the nose for over an hour before it finally started to shine. My patience was rewarded as the beast miraculously turned into some kind of a beauty. Ripe red fruit, violets and a mineral touch. — 5 years ago
