Cautionary Tail

Fat Orange Cat Cautionary Tail Pumpkin Ale. North Haven, CT

Brown and flinty orange body has a coffee with cream head that loosely rises. Drawn and quartered lacing has bubble eyed ghosts and barn owl faces in an appropriate nod. Warm and cozy comfort spices rise from sweet potatoes, maple syrup, brown sugar and butter cauldrons, while spider eyes blink and pop on a wisp of fog as stringy as Spanish moss. The head is gone like the last gasp of an autumn tree, and the gourd ascends. Cinnamon sticks and nutmeg creak in the vestiges of twilight. Only darkness now. Roasted pecan, burnt brown sugar, toffee and treacle, crowned by a full moon scoop of vanilla cream.

Solid stuff. Dusty dirt, dark red fruit, currant, black pepper, tree bark. Still dusty tannins. Acidity passes quickly. Palate is ditto. — 4 years ago

Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay

Wowza! I have loved every bottle of Bedrock I have tasted, but this one is a stunner. Morgan is known for red blends, but my favorites are the whites. I have loved the Rieslings for a couple of years, but now I have a new girlfriend. Wish I could have bought a case.
The nose is typical for the AVA, more tropical than tree fruit, but then on the palate delivers sharply focused acidity, that desirable balance of acid and wood that I find in great Burgundy, some nice spice and butterscotch to round it out and all lemon custard on the finish. Simple and complex at the same time, can’t wait to see what this wine will do with some time under its belt.
Is there anything that this guy can’t make beautifully. Definitely my go to producer these days. Check it out.

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2015

Perfect pizza wine four hours decanted. Vicolo Corn Meal Goat Cheese Pizza with our fresh ingredients.

The body is round, rich & lush. The structure, tension, balance & finish still need 3-5 years plus years to truly shine. Slightly sweet & sour & floral, dark cherries, ripe blueberries, dark plum, black raspberries, dark, slightly, sweet tarriness, anise, lead pencil, dry stone, dry clay, dark spice, limestone, crushed, dry rocks, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, vanillin, fresh & dry tobacco, dry twigs, tree sap, dry herbs, savory meats, touch of pepper with candied & withering; dark, red, purple & some blue flowers framed in lavender & violets. Very good cool stream river acidity. The finish is still youthful (even decanted 4 plus hours) well balanced fruit & earth, ripe, juicy, elegant & it persists endlessly.

Even better in 3-5 years.

Produttori at the time we were there in the fall of 2015 was the 3rd largest European Co-op. It is located at the top of the town of Barbaresco, right under the church. We tasted there before going into Gaja down the street. Then, onto one of the best Michelin starred restaurants that is adjacent to Gaja we’ve had. 70 Euros lunch for two. The food was outstanding & rarely had that level of service.

Tradition Sparkling Chardonnay - Pinot Noir Blend 2019

2019 NV. Super interesting stuff. Finesse and complexity of well made traditional method but completely distinct in style. Traditional citrus is mixed with slightly oxidative honey and tree sap, with a grippy, refreshing phenolic touch and an orange bitters complexity on the palate. Autolytic profile is not front and center, supports the forest-like freshness. Dosage is zero but you wouldn’t guess it, it’s in balance, not just trendy — 3 years ago

Smells of plums, ripe and on the tree..

Gorgeous red and purple fruits here, lots of co mingling like it’s a cornucopia of a soirée.
Interesting that I could find this vintage just hanging around a wine shop, so thrilled when the flavors matched exactly what I wanted.
Very light acidity left, medium oak, yet now more of a memory.

Hendricks Wines

Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2014

Charles strikes again.

I said weeks ago, I’d rather drink Charles Hendricks Pinot in futures @ $75 vs. the 09 Marcassin we had two weeks back @ $150+ winery or $225+ on the secondary market. This 14, while still young, proves that point and will only continue to get better.

It’s about as luxurious as Ca Pinot gets. Just supple, soft & elegant as body gets. Candied, floral fruits of ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, blue fruits, lean purple fruits, dry cranberries, strawberries, plums, delicate but darks spices, cinnamon stick, vanillin, nutmeg & touch clove, salted caramel, mocha powder, limestone & grey volcanics, dry crushed rocks hints of peppered grilled meats, fresh & dry tobacco, dry stems/twigs, sage dominated dry Provence herbs, splash of mint/eucalyptus, tree sap with bright candied, fresh & slightly withering florals of; dark, red, purple, blue set in a field of violets & some lavender. The acidity is perfect. The long finish is; extremely well balanced & polished, elegant, fresh, just the right amount of candied with a long, dark spice finish in the long set.

The 14 really started to excel after an hour plus in the decanter.

Photos of; the outside of the Hope & Grace tasting room in downtown Yountville where you will find Charles Hendricks wines. He makes Hope & Grace wines as well. One of my favorite paintings that used to sit behind their tasting bar but, is now in Charles house. It is very Pollock like! Moulin de la Roque

Les Hauts du Vallon Bandol Red Rhone Blend 2017

I got this bargain Bandol, made by a co-op of growers, from Last Bottle for a song, and it’s surprisingly good. 95% Mourvèdre, 5% Carignane. Nose is densely fruity, with freshly-crushed blackberry and other unidentifiable (to me) berries, with a pleasant slight vegetal note, along with some sweet spice and warm gravel. Loads of dark fruit in the mouth, along with some tree-barkey, leathery notes. The initial mouthfeel is soft and dense, and quite fruity, but the tannins progress into the finish, which shows some dark minerality and a slight bitter component (not unpleasant). For a slightly rustic and gutsy weeknight red, this is a great choice. — 3 years ago

Eola - Amity Hills Pinot Noir 2014

Ripe tree red fruits on the nose, cranberry and red cherries, and a little earthiness (Earl Grey Tea per Andrea). Light on the palate with tart cranberry acid, strawberry fruitiness, and good acid with some lingering earthy tannin. Fruitier than expected for Oregon, and would make an awesome Thanksgiving wine. Paired amazingly with salmon over a mushroom risotto. — 6 years ago
