Sassella Valtellina Superiore 2019

Mineral, leather, tart cherry, bread pudding/flan on the nose…
Iron, slate, chalk on the palate… very rustic! Tart mountain wine, different expression of Nebbiolo than its home while keeping the tannic structure!!

Grumello Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo 2016

Like most Valtellinas, the color is very pale, and its 9 years of age are apparent in the amber rim. The nose is superb. Dried cherry, faded roses, light leather, some old library scents, some crushed stone. Lively in the mouth, with buoyant acids propelling along minerally just-ripe macerated cherry fruit, crushed rocks, and old barrel notes. I can’t imagine this will improve, and it’s drinking really well right now. Classic. — 3 months ago

Sassella Vigna degli Apostoli Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo 2015

Ming L
9.2

This is Sassella Vigna degli Apostoli, the winery’s top bottling. My first Valtellina - the alpine Nebbiolo.

The nose is reminiscent of a good Barolo with tart cherry, steeped black tea, oak spices, dried mushroom, and violet. The palate leans on the fruity side, lively, smooth and poised. Mellow tannins. Finishes long.

From a small single Cru in Sassella, considered by most the best sub zone of Valtellina Superior. Aged in large oak barrels for 26 months, steel tanks for 3, and bottle for 36. I believe only 2 vintages release so far, ‘15 being the latest one.

I love the delicacy and transparency of good Valtellina.

I was impressed and would love to explore most, but hard to find a Valtellina in the US @Tom Casagrande .
