Vincent Dauvissat

La Forest Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2020

I’ve said it before…for Dauvissat, I consistently find Forest to drink pretty much just as well as the Grand Crus, especially after proper aeration. 2020 is a fabulous rendition, open and giving and adding serious weight with some time in the decanter. Pure, textured and expansive with electric acids and layered Chablisen minerality. As it is often with these wines, last glass was the best. — 5 months ago

Bandini Villa Pomona

Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese 2020

A unique style of CC with minerality leading throughout. There’s pure, intense cherry fruit on the nose, but it takes a back seat to the quarry activity. Same thing goes for the palate. Very intense minerality. Structurally there is quite a bit of soft, chalky tannin and decent acids. The finish ends minerally and with a slight bitter note. Very good, but not the most elegant rendition. Maybe give it a year or two more to come together. — 2 years ago

Kirchspiel Großes Gewächs Riesling 2019

Pop and pour. Fascinating. Entirely unlike any rendition of Kirchspiel from this producer that I have ever tasted. On the nose: peach, ripe guava, and a strong coffee/toast note, vaguely reminiscent of von Winning's Pechstein. On the palate more as expected: lovely acidity, amazing density, light lemon cotton candy, followed by dense lemon oil and lime. Lovely contrast, and an elegant tangy finish. Yum! — 4 years ago

La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah

Had an op to re-buy at $115 and wanted to check in on the 2006. What a nice rendition. Perhaps not the best vintage overall, but in really great shape right now with the typical tobacco aromas. Needless to say, I am buying more — 5 years ago

Domaine Jean Chartron

Clos des Chevaliers Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 2012

I don’t know if this is what Ramonet gets for their Chevy in trade for Batard but it certainly didn’t have the Ramonet mint/menthol. A lean balanced very clean rendition, lemon and other citrus, great texture and finesse, not real powerful but very persistent and enjoyable. Very light on its feet, it has a litheness I love about Chevalier. — 5 years ago

Domaine Louis Moreau

Vaillons Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2016

I misplaced my notes on this Premier Cru Chablis but I do remember the lovely stone fruit flavours and low acid - quite a ripe rendition for Chablis. The bottom line - Delicious. Can’t see the point of extended cellaring for this one. — 6 years ago

Domaine du Gour de Chaulé

Cuvée Tradition Gigondas Grenache 2016

What an incredible bouquet on the 2016 Gour de Chaulé Gigondas, opening with violet florals and peppery spice, as crushed black raspberry, blueberry, sweet minerals, lavender and smoky minerals fill the senses. It washes across the palate with mineral-tinged black berry and spice, as a mix of minerals and youthful tannin, which perfectly frame the experience emerge along with purple florals which echo throughout. The finish is long, structured and perfectly balanced, resonating on spicy black fruits and violet flowers over a core of juicy acids.  The 2016 Gour de Chaulé Gigondas may be the best rendition of this wine that I’ve ever experienced. — 6 years ago

@Eric Guido I absolutely agree. Best showing I’ve experienced from this Domaine

Domaine des Bosquets

Le Lieu Dit... Gigondas Grenache 2019

This needs a lengthy decant. Wonderfully spicy and herbal rendition of (100%) Grenache. There is a generous dose of sweet red fruit, yet it never gets alcoholic, flabby nor tiresome. Great Grenache.

Dry River

Lovat Vineyard Syrah 2013

An excellent rendition of a northern Rhone Syrah from Martinborough New Zealand. My last bottle. Notes of white pepper, spice and dried meat. Very good. — 3 years ago

Ulysse Collin

Extra Brut Le Jardin d'Ulysse Pinot Noir Blend

The second edition of Jardin d'Ulysse, based on the 2016 vintage and aged 60 months on the lees has turned out brilliantly, already showing even better than the last time I had it. A taut, racy rendition with a stunningly silky texture while simultaneously rich with just the slightest oxidative complexity that’s beginning to build and only adding to its attraction. Its floral, spice and citrus inflicted aromatics are layered between its chalky mineral core and the palate is chiseled, full bodied, satiny and ultra concentrated, with a structure built to age. This second release is already incredible and is only going to get better. Love these wines 🙌🏻 — 3 years ago

Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu

Santa Cruz de Artazu Garnacha 2016

This is the Artazu Pasos de San Martin Navarra, a varietal Garnacha. A bit sleepy before it gets air, it gradually Benjamin Buttons and develops a terrifically pure nose of kirsch and raspberry ooze, along with crushed rock dust and sandalwood. In the mouth it’s got intense fruit, but is laser-focused and has excellent acids. Zero flab.
Just enough tannin to package it all. Really nice rendition of Grenache.

Fanucchi Wood Road Vineyard Trousseau Gris 2017

Alder Yarrow
9.7

There are few wines that so consistently deliver utter pleasure and deliciousness as this utterly perfect rendition of Trousseau Gris from @jolielaidewines. Pick you hipster wine adjective - smashable, crushable, glou glou - it fits them all. Goes down in a sunbeam of peach and citrus kissed berries with gorgeous floral tones with just a whisper of salinity. Mouthwatering and joyous. Even though I buy this by the case, I never, ever have enough. — 5 years ago

Canobolas-Smith

Alchemy Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

First time for this producer and very rarely have wines from the Orange District. Lovely aromatics, not really Cab Sauv but then I noticed the blend was 45% Cab Sauvignon; 45% Cab Franc; 10% Shiraz. A lovely Aussie right bank rendition you might say. Red and black fruits with plum and tobacco notes. The palate is sweetish and luscious texture with supple tannins. This wine proves that Orange Is an accredited Australian wine district for both Reds and Whites taking in Hilltops. Have experienced the excellent whites from here and must seek out more Reds based on the quality of this wine. — 6 years ago

Château Mayne Lalande

Listrac-Médoc Cabernet Franc Blend 1999

Well, what an overachiever this wine is! Mayne Lalande, a little known chateau in Listrac-Médoc, and a bottle which I picked up for a humble price at auction around a year ago. It’s fresh, sappy, delicious and positively refreshing at 12% abv. I wish I had more of this. A joyous rendition of old left-bank Bordeaux. — 2 years ago

Bishop's Peak

Talley Vineyards Pinot Noir 2022

OH SO good. And for a very reasonable price in the 20’s. A spicy rendition, showing clove, white pepper and black tea on the nose (on top of to-be-expected-but-not-unwanted) of ripe red cherry. The palate brings in more green notes, contrasting the ripe fruit and fruitcake spices, but the acid is vibrant, and the tannins are scarcely there—this is a smooth, smooth glass of goodness. — 2 years ago

Comtes de Champagne Grand Crus Brut Blanc de Blancs 2006

Apples, citrus, brioche. Not as well-rounded as the 2008 but a very nice rendition of the Comtes. Aging very gracefully with at least 1-2 decades to go. — 3 years ago

Pattes Loup (Thomas Pico)

Vent d'Ange Chablis Chardonnay 2017

Always a textural interpretation of Chablis, the ‘17 rendition of the Vent d’Ange has developed even better than I expected. There is a real salinity that balances out the depth that comes from a long elevage and extended lees contact. — 4 years ago

Azienda Agricola Cordella

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Very pure and substantial rendition. Lots of ripe dark cherry, cracked stone infused gravel, subtle bright spice note. Round and soft in the mouth, bright and cherryish on entry and then savory/ minerally stuff kicks in. A teensy bit of tannin and good acids. So great with a tomato-intensive pasta dinner. — 5 years ago

Château d'Yquem

Y Ygrec Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2016

Homemade lobster pasta needed a match and it found it. This is evolving to be a very nice rendition of the Ygrec with subtle crispness of the Sauvignon and the floral goodness of the Semillon. Will keep the other bottles for a few more years — 6 years ago

Le Morette di Valerio Zenato

Lugana Mandolara Turbiana 2015

ESF
9.2

We used to live near Lake Garda and got to know these wines made w/Turbiana - they are exquisite! This rendition was a little fatter w/some heft weight & viscosity - yellowish color and obvious effect of prolonged lees contact. Generous nose of savory nutty herbaceousness, grass and fresh cut flowers mingled w/yellow fruit & apples. Well defined acidic backbone and lingering finish. — 6 years ago
