Montevertine

Le Pergole Torte Sangiovese 2006

Balanced herbs and fruit shine with bay leaf. Still a lot of power. — 4 days ago

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2017

Is there a better SJ on the planet? This had a shoe polish, glycerin note with a silky, elegant texture showing black cherry, raspberry, black olive, sweet & savory spices, graphite & violets. — 2 years ago

To answer your question...probably not.

Agreed. Only the Trollat is better and they’re rarer than hen’s teeth and 10x the cost. These are made from the same vines as far as I’m aware and they’re as good as the very best Northern Rhône’s. Our palates are, as usual, aligned

I have only been able to try the 96 Trollat. As you stated super rare & rarely seen.

Le Mont Benoit Extra Brut Pinot Meunier Blend

LC18. Needed some air to really shine, and when it did… gosh, was it delish! Epitomises intensity without weight. — 3 years ago

Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

Medium to full bodied Pinot from Sta. Rita Hills. Medium weight in the glass with notes of red berries, cinnamon, damp earth and spice. Decent length in the finish. This could use another 2-3 yrs and really shine. — 2 years ago

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

Delicious plummy fruit. Soft and supple and silly in the mouth. Plums, iron, damson. Very opulent but still a little contained. All the 2000’s need a bit more time to really shine. — 3 years ago

Grand Siècle Grande Cuvée Champagne Blend

Wow! Delicate bubbles let the chard and Pinot noir shine through. A bit of vanilla and bright lemon and brioche. Not too dry and a lovely bright mouth feel. Fantastic! — 2 years ago

Cantina Bartolo Mascarello

Barolo Nebbiolo 2004

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2004 Barolo (magnum) is soft and silky, but it is also more forward than I expect, or want, to be honest. Dried flowers, leather, spice, game and dark-fleshed fruit fill out the layers. Vertical tastings serve, among other things, to shine a bright light on a single wine over many vintages. In this context, the 2004 does not live up to my original enthusiasm.
