Smooth, silt, and subtle. Bright red cherry, a bit of oak, hint of vanilla. Balanced, a bit youthful. Best with a bit of focus —

2018 vintage. Yet another 2018 that’s out of the blocks quickly. Not getting much out of the nose besides silt, black coffee and a little dark cherry. Medium-bodied. Smoother than a polished marble floor right now with just enough acidity. Espresso bean, bleached white paper, that dark cherry, brandy and raspberry pushing the tasting narrative. Had pushed all my chips into the center of the table with their 2015 and (to a lesser extent) 2016 vintages. May hafta open a line of credit for this vintage. — 5 years ago

This wine was produced when Led Zeppelin released Kashmir, and Queen released Bohemian Rhapsody. Letting that sink in as I swirl the glass.
The cork was slightly depressed, and it fell apart, so I had to do some first aid. All is well. The wine pours out a very deep garnet at its core, with tawny edges. So far so good.
The nose is old, and I was afraid of the musty notes, but I think it's healthy tertiary aromas, not spoilage. Mushroom and forest floor. I don't have a lot of experience with 50 year old wine. Hey, I was made the same year this wine was!
The palette is excellent. Plenty of fruit present.. cherry, candied apricot, slate, and Flintstone vitamins. It tastes young! If I had this blind I would guess it's 20 years old.
No sediment or silt. This still has hefty acidity and lingering, cedar-like tannins. Crazy. I've had current bottles bottles of Chateau Caruel, which is an inexpensive wine, and they just don't make them like they used to. This wine is legitimately elegant and delicious. 30 minutes in, and I'm wondering where I can buy a case. What a fun experience!

Powerful wine. Medium weight beautiful color. Slight silt on decant. The cherry is pronounced but the terroir is also evident and balances it nicely with earthy elements and roundness. Slightly puckering but only to give the wine breadth. It complimented the salty veal saltimbocca and I look forward to the next bottle. — 3 years ago
New to Barolo, definitely a 2nd day wine in its youth. Much better than last nights glass,
James Suckling 98
"The fruit feels so comfortable here, in the ripe-red zone; it ranges from cherry kernel to chocolate-coated red plums to glazed cherries. Integrated hints of bark and sandalwood. Full-bodied with strapping tannins and muscular, imposing structure and power. Notwithstanding, everything is in striking balance and delivered with remarkable precision and grit."

"The Damilano 2016 Barolo Cannubi shows depth and a profound nature. This is the DNA of the Cannubi cru, maybe the most celebrated in the appellation with mildly compact, well-draining sandy soils (actually, a mix of 45 sand, 35 silt and 20 clay, to be precise). These conditions contribute to the dark concentration and the firm textural support found here. These assets are particularly apparent in this classic vintage. Dark fruit and dried cherry cede to earthy truffle and licorice. Of these various single-vineyard expressions, the tight tannins on this Cannubi definitely suggest a long drinking window. This wine is my favorite in this flight from Damilano, and this vintage of 40,000 bottles is distinguished by its sheer excellence." — 5 years ago
Stuck inside and dreaming of better days abroad or just in a backyard with friends?
This wine helped me take a little escape to the island of Corsica, the home of the one and only Napoleon Bonaparte. This is one of 2 amazing rose wines from Marquiliani. This was my first Gris rose from Marquiliani and it's been a few years since I hade the regular rose.
Domaine Marquiliani is one of the top producers of wine (and olive oil & almonds) on the island and are a small family owned and operated by Anne Amalric and her father Daniel who founded the modern history of this winery in the 1950s.
Pale and watery in color, this is the "Gris" rose. Gorgeous notes of pink citrus, jasmine florals, minerals and fennel seed, no doubt from the high dose of Syrah in the blend. The wine grew tremendously in the glass and after an hour it was firing on all cylinders. Elegant on the palate with a stunning density and length on the nose. Pure and refreshing, it appealed to both the intellectual and hedonistic side of my tastes. Gorgeous, buying more ASAP!

Elegant and lighter expression of Garnacha from Commando G. Fresh and tart red cherry and raspberry. Dried cherries as well. Violet, rose, licorice. Compost, Brett, peppercorn, and roasted tea. Bright ruby with garnet rim. Low concentration. Medium (-) acidity, medium alcohol, medium (+) tannin. On silt, clay, and granitic sandy soils. Whole cluster fermentation, 50-60 year old vines, vinified in concrete tanks and large old foudre. Altitude: 950m. — 7 years ago
Here’s a dry, crisp white made from the Muscat variety (Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains), which is the same grape & has the same aromatic profile as the sweet, sparkling Moscato d’Asti wines of Italy, but was made in a dry, still & “French” style.
It was crafted by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, an organic & biodynamic Alsatian producer, with fruit hailing from the Herrenweg vineyard of Turckheim, atop alluvial gravel & silt soils, in the sunny & dry Munster valley. ☀️🌱
Immediately I was struck by the perfumed bouquet of fruit & florals on the nose, which persist on the palate, featuring harmonious notes of citrus blossom, jasmine, honeysuckle, lilac, white peach, apricot, yellow apple, mandarin peel, beeswax, & wet stones. It’s dry, w/ medium alcohol, a medium body, balanced by a refreshing acidity.
It was a lovely pairing with the cucumber, watermelon, & feta salad, adding aromatic dimensions that complement the flavors of the salad, with a strong personality that doesn’t get lost in the shadows. Cheers! — a year ago

Very drinkable in mixed company. Fruit forward, dark cherry, plum, light oak, but not overly jammy. Likely valley floor grapes as sulfur and silt, earthy notes were less prevalent. Did not have to decant to be enjoyed but the depth of flavor continued to unfold over time. Wet mouth feel, likely less grape skin tannins makes this more universally approachable. Nice legs and inky hugh. I look forward to enjoying again. — 2 years ago
White wine made with Merseguera, an indigenous variety from Valencia, sourced from the Calvestra vineyard, located at 900 metres elevation on limestone soils with a silt-sandy texture. Not very aromatic. Elegant, round creamy — 5 years ago
Nose has pear slice, orange zest, various under-ripe stone fruits, pineapple core and yellow flowers; not overly expressive at this time.
Palate has tart pineapple, orange peel, slightly chalky, yellow apple and mild barrel flavors (more new than neutral?). Decent finish, but seems a little closed here as well.
90m decant; Note to future self, check again 2022-23-ish.
Winery Notes:
"Le Clos du Château" is essentially a vineyard of approximately five hectares that sits in front of the Château de Puligny and is entirely enclosed by walls. This facilitates our bio-dynamic farming methods.
Classified as Bourgogne AOC, this vineyard is remarkably well situated in the village on the border of the Puligny-Montrachet vineyards. The deep soil, consisting of silt and clay gives the wine a lovely generosity.

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this evening with the the Boston Pops Orchestra. Our Conductor Keith Lockhart is leading an all John WILLIAMS program, with Mr. Williams (hopefully) sharing some of his wonderful stories to accompany the scores.
The program includes selections from..Superman, Heidi, Jaws, The Towering Inferno, Memoirs of a Geisha Oliver, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Olympic Fanfare & Theme, JFK, Schindler's List, The Witches of Eastwick, Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Empire Strikes Back, The Force Awakens and...Star Wars. Caiarossa – “Pergolaia” Red blend– 2020
IGT Toscana – Riparbella, Alta Maremma – Italy 🇮🇹
Overview
A biodynamically farmed Super Tuscan red built around Sangiovese as the core, blended with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Pergolaia is Caiarossa’s most approachable expression, combining Mediterranean warmth with coastal freshness.
Aromas & Flavors
Red cherries, dried cranberry, tobacco leaf, and baking spices with hints of plum, cedar, and faint herbal tones. A mix of earthy Tuscan soul and dark-fruit Bordeaux flair.
Mouthfeel
Medium-bodied, supple, and structured with polished tannins and lively acidity. Balanced, savory, and elegant rather than opulent. The finish is clean with a gentle mineral echo.
Food Pairings
Pasta al ragù, roasted chicken, mushroom risotto, aged pecorino, or grilled sausages with herbs.
Verdict
A smart, quietly refined Tuscan blend, accessible yet serious, with the coastal lift that makes Caiarossa wines so compelling. A great value when you want nuance, not weight.
Did You Know?
Caiarossa farms according to Demeter-certified biodynamic principles, and their vineyards sit on a mix of clay, silt, and volcanic rock, a key reason for the signature mineral tension in their wines. — 7 months ago
