100% Monica
Med+ acidity, trim sandy soil body, Plum, craberry skin, tea tannin, slight bitter, graphite/pencil, berry in the finish.
Enjoyed without decant, deserves 1-1.5 hr. decant.
I love Monica, a varietal I would like to see more of. Bet it would grow wonderfully in Baja (Prove me wrong). — 4 years ago
Vibrant red. Aromas of violet, red cherry and licorice on the nose. Trim and modestly built, but with very good acid-fruit-tannin balance and clean flavors of red cherry and herbs on the medium-long finish. I expect this to improve with a little bottle age. (Ian D'Agata, Vinous, April 2020)

Ate with Vitek’s in Las Vegas at Wynn Merril, Pam and I all really liked this. — 5 years ago
Da bomb, for sherry lovers: Palo Cortado versión. A shape shifter on the palate & ringing on the higher registers, this Hidalgo checks all the boxes for me, which includes a lightness & freshness heaven made for most food. Burnt pine cone & toffee bits, a subtle mushroom thing (oyster?), & a rather trim beef bouillon broth lurking on the back end. That may all be bs but it’s a wine that inspires….. — 3 years ago
This is my first review of the 2013 vintage… When it arrived as a club distribution, the admonition was to let it rest for a couple years because it was a little too wound up… Well it has unwound and is staying in its lane quite nicely. You really do get the varietal signature and mouth feel… Not overly complex, but decidedly balanced. Two more of this vintage remain and I look forward to next year to see how it is at eight years old. Mostly bright red fruit with Ethan trim frame of rosey florality. Well done Nathaniel! — 4 years ago
Nose has ripe blackberry, over-ripe black currant, dehydrated black cherry, moist prune, dried mint, old leather, old cedar, fresh cigar, ever so slight eucalyptus and milk chocolate powder.
Palate has velvety black fruits, blackberry/black cherry/plum, cedar, wet leather, wet volcanic rock, moist garden soil and wow what a finish, so long, so beautiful. Well cellared '96 CA should last forever! Medium tannins persist! Decanted 6H, more time would be appreciated, alas our last and only bottle, damn it.
Paired to Allen Bros. filets (Prime/Complete Trim) grilled to 127° then rested for 12m, perfectly medium rare; Toasted orzo with grilled squash and brussel sprouts with bacon. 🤤
An early Father's Day with my parents, so I don't have to compete with my Sister & Nephew's in 24 hours, plus we'll have the better wine. 🤞 — 4 years ago
With global warming, this GSM is much more attractive than 90% of the Southern Rhône blends it’s patterned after. Nose has lots of kirschy Grenache fruit, loads of smoky ground stone minerality, and roasted green herbs. Trim yet mouthfilling, the palate is dry, not jammy at all, yet with nicely ripe fruit and tons of savory notes accompanied by zingy acids. Great dinner pal. — 5 years ago
Solid value for a Bourdeaux. Paired well with Costco trim tip. — 6 years ago

One of the best producers of white wine in the appellation, IMHO. Tight and trim, pithy and linear, peach, white flowers and electric minerality on the palate. Super expressive and great with food. — 3 years ago
