Been a bit over 4 years since I have had the. Nose is classic with tar, tobacco, ripe mid season cherries, really provocative spice notes, and some chestnut. Palate is ripe and minty with ripe but substantial tannins and not that much finesse which I hope will develop with air. Juicy and so clean but lacking some excitement. — a month ago

Château d'Epiré

Cuvée Spéciale Savennières Chenin Blanc

Such a musk! You could bottle this as a cologne and I’d buy it. Chestnut, fennel pollen, golden apple, dried pear, beeswax, white pepper, very subtle sherry-like notes. Amazing pairing with pork pate and with confit chicken wings. Becomes more honeyed with time in the glass/decanter. Old Chenin 😁 — 3 years ago

Wow is nose a smokeshow out of the gates. Huge chestnut, smoke, cuban cigar, light cherry that will get more defined with air, mesquite bbq, burnt charcoal, dedicated leaves, loam and sea air. So evocative and truly a scene in nature type nose. Wow what a palate. So juicy and vibrant but still needs air for fruit to round into place and become fully expressive. The tannins are elegant and sweet. This has the best acidity and freshness of any Gilodi so far. Gorgeous textures and such delicate yet refined mid to early season cherry fruit. Long and super tangy finish with great lift. Outstanding. But will vastly improve over the next 36 hours. I’ll keep updating. — 10 months ago

Primanebbia Langhe Nebbiolo 2015

As awesome as ever and I hope they bottle it soon so I can offer it. Soaring nose of spices, roses, cherries and tar. Super ethereal. Also wild mint. Tree bark. Old chestnut. Intoxicating aromas and seems much finer than the 12. Palate is wonderful. So refined and juicy. Deep, ripe, rich and complex but shows none of the bad character that 2015 can get. Wonderful length and purity. Really fine and elegant tannins. So juicy. Gone of ripe mid season cherries. Tannins get more pronounced as this airs and air is this wine’s best friend so I will be back in an hour.

9.3 to 9.5. This Langhe Nebbiolo crushes many a producer’s Barbaresco. It gains elegance, sweet fruit and insane depth. What a wine.

Bertani

Secco-Bertani Vintage Edition Valpolicella Corvina Blend 2015

Before airing, nose was weird and furniture-like. But things normalized quickly. This is one of the more complex non-Ripasso Valpos out there (yes, I know it’s not officially DOC). Nose has bitter cherry, almond, tilled soil (almost like the smell of just-pulled carrots). Great balance, fruit and acid in abundance, soft mouthfeel, lighter weight. Tannins resolved. Bone dry. Finish is minerally and savory. Would work with a wide range of Italian food. I should note that the back label states that this was made in accordance with a 19th century traditional technique, including aging in chestnut and cherrywood barrels. — 3 years ago

Perhaps that contributed to the bitter cherry- almond flavors?
