Damn, the Germans have just laid down a great hand of cards in the Sauvignon Blanc game.
More tropical and spice notes than Loire or NZ, actually, strangely the nose is more similar (yet more elegant and restrained) to the finer North American SBs I've tried. Minerality is medium and hard to pick out a soil type. Acidity is on the lower side.
Flavours follow the nose with pineapple, pear, allspice, Rainier cherry.
I favored the bottle that was open for an hour+. The new bottle gave me a very 2022 sense (ie: a young tart) — 7 months ago
Wow. Great dry Riesling that has flavors of pineapple and citrus and other complex fruit flavors, with a fruity nose of pineapple and peach. So much more than I expected: truly a great dry Riesling and better than other vintages of this wine. — 2 years ago
Amazing nose. Mid to late season very ripe cherries, cranberry bog, white chocolate, and some citrus rind. Gorgeous. Spice and violets as well. Palate is rich and tense at the same time with gorgeous sweet cherry fruit and unreal purity and freshness. Super silky and sweet with great acidity and mineral sweet cherry finish. Now with air there is gorgeous blackberry and black raspberry. Unreal red cherries and spice. Really lifted nose. Palate is much redder than the nose lets on and has really engaging minerality. So pure and well made. Almost a 9.5. — 3 months ago
Medium + lemon yellow in colour. Aromas of yellow fruits (peach) with a honeyed note. Carries through to the medium + intensity palate with a certain texture from the oak maturation. As outlined in previous notes putting Riesling to oak doesn’t seem right although it is more integrated than previous tastings, but it is an old German thing - arguably the Godfathers of Riesling. Impossible not to like this. The GG quality coming through. Ready to drink. — a year ago
Peak of summer is Kabi time!
Fresh & light yet punching some much flavour!
After the first naphtha nose blows off this shows amazing purity & freshness with fresh vineyard peaches, underripe apricots, a flowery whiff, some tangerine peel. And cool, slightly spicy, slate minerality. Very enticing!
Not exactly weightless as some can be (warm vintage), this delivers beautiful purity of fruit balanced off with zingy acidity. Nicely poised & balanced. Very elegant and highly drinkable.
This is really good stuff! — 3 months ago
Nose: an elegant perfume of green apples.
Palate: perfect crunchy green apple juice. Powders minerals. Crystalline acids. Elegant density. Almost crunchy. There is a perfection about this. Stunningly well made. Wow.
Almost the platonic apogee of dry mosel Riesling.

The 2016 “Kalkofen” pours a golden color with maybe a slight sign of some gas? Obviously unintended. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of tropical fruit, petrol, and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+(?) acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. There is so much squishy fruit that it seemed to trick the palate initially but with air, this started to show more acid. The finish is long. Drink now and through 2031…possibly longer considering the amount of youthful fruit present. Danke Tim! — 8 months ago

A beautiful example of a Pfalz Riesling - elegant, rounded, very Burgundian.
White peach and lemon peel, a whiff of white flowers and just a slight hint of wood.
On the palate this is impeccably balanced, with zingy acidity balanced with ripe peachy fruit. All that on a bed of rocky minerality with a very long, fine, salty fresh finish. This has nice depth and brilliant drinkability. Great stuff, even from the trickier 22 vintage.
Never disappoints. — 14 days ago
