Fire I Fogo

Bianchello del Metauro 2022

Crisp, some apple, citrus, and a long finish. Biancello is the local grape along the Metauro River, which flows through Fano to the Adriatic. My nonna was Fanese, so I have an affinity for this. My last bottle. This is a seafood/ simmer app wine. It’s 60, so break out the shorts and fire up the grill! — 4 months ago

Ætneus Etna Rosso Nerello Blend 2011

I love that the vineyard is a mix of very old, middle aged and young vines. When an old one dies, they plant a young one. One of the best values in Etna Rosso. Mix of black and red fruit, little tannic, smoke and fire on the finish. — 2 years ago

Avennia

Gravura Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2018

Tasting really nice. Chocolate, tart cherries, Baking spice, also a brawny/woodsy quality. The wood is more sandalwood as it opens, very smooth finish with a mixed of crushed berries with a dark chocolate sauce. Maybe even berry cobbler. I really like it. Not a great food pairing wine but nice to drink in front of fire on a rainy evening. — 3 years ago

Deidesheimer Langenmorgen GG Riesling 2019

Smells of honeysuckle and ripe honeydew. Scream in the city, mouthwatering deliciousness. A perfect balance to dry and sweet. I can’t pick out if it’s a little sweet or a little dry but it’s wonderful for whatever it is. Thoroughly enjoying this one, you just have to be ready for the acidity. Drinking this reminds me of dating a Latina, sweet and fire and everything you desire. 🤣 — 4 years ago

Smooth, smooth, smooth like the leather in my Lamborghini (don’t I wish!!). Dry and well balanced. Nice by itself and great with wood-fire pizza! — 5 years ago

Château de Roquefort

Corail Côtes de Provence Grenache Rosé Blend 2019

This wine is more about the setting it compliments than the flavors it resembles. A fire pit on a crisp autumn night with friends - hits the spot.

If flavor is more your style, orange peel and tart red berries. I paired it with s’mores and a flannel shirt.

So much more time to go though I think it’s starting to fire on all 12 cylinders! Fresh, full bodied yet sultry fruit cassis and yet still with the subtlety of a cat — 6 years ago

Borne of Fire

The Burn Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Clear, deep ruby in color; on the nose, it's clean with medium intensity primary and secondary aromas of blackberries, cassis, and graphite; on the palate, it's dry with high acidity, high tannins, high alcohol, full body, and pronounced primary and secondary flavors of black cherries, blueberries, black cardamom and bell pepper with a long finish. This wine is complex and intense. Overall, I rate this wine as very good. — 4 months ago

Diane de Belgrave

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Final meal in Paris. I had read about Anthony Bourdain liking this place because of its simplicity and perfectly cooked meat. (Apparently one of his favorites in Paris). Great meal to close our week in Paris, especially if you like fire grilled meat as much as we do.

The Diane de Belgrade was a textbook Bordeaux. I liked it even more after a bit of time in the glass. This wine is also a reminder that even simple bottles can be amazing. @Robert et Louise in Le Marais.

Château Les Cabannes

St. Émilion Grand Cru

Blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Color: light Burgundy red that looks like the juice of forest floor fruits, like red currants. Reminds me of a Christmas red. It glows like a warm Christmas light.

Aroma: smells rich and fruity like it has money. Spice fruit like a mulled wine but not the same spices. Smells like red currants, black currants, cherry, deep red berry like fruits. It's a savory fruity like what you would find in a sauce to accompany a roast not a dessert. It reminds me of something with a holiday meal by the fire.

Taste: smooth and light with a creamyish texture. It's light to medium body. Not creamy in taste. It very little acid. It's very rounded flavor, not one fruit note pops out much. It reminds me slightly of cooking fruits in a sauce, like black currants. The taste slightly lingers after swallowing but gently. Slightly bitter taste like I'm ready for a meal.

It's something I would have with a lovely roast dinner at home by the fire. Its warm, smooth, and light that i could drink it on its own. But its also, has enough heft to stand up to gravy I feel. It's delicious. A winter wine.

Impressive and massive palate. Very full body (14.5%), vivid acidity, grained tannins. Chokeberry, hibiscus, red currant skins, basil, lilac broth, black gooseberry, unripe saskatoon, earth, cigar, roasted cacao beans, lavender, savory, espresso flavors.

Avennia

Boushey Vineyard Arnaut Yakima Valley Syrah 2014

Great nose. Smoky fire pit. Grilled beef. Dark ripe blackberry. A little leaner and less weighty in the mouth than the nose suggests. An initial wallop of savory flavors followed by some nice acidity, and then the finish slows down and lingers. Would be amazing with a grilled porterhouse. (I had it with pizza, which was less than ideal.) — 7 years ago

Estate Grown El Dorado Mourvédre 2019

This is pretty interesting. Sierra foothills. Kind of spicy ripe Burgundian feel to it, might be just entering the downslope, but pretty enjoyable right now. Not super extracted. Earthy. Light to medium body. Tertiary. Some red fruits. Maybe a little wonky. Fire sale at K&L. $15 (was 60). // edit: I like this quite a bit better on day two from the fridge. — a year ago

As close to perfection as can be..,, smooth, silken, 2-minute finish. Nose of ripe, preserved, wrinkled apples…complete, complex, hints of baking spices, lighter than anticipated, but packing that 80 proof wallop. I anticipate most of bottle will grace a cool winter evening in front of the fire for 2 couples! — 3 years ago

This was enjoyable. Smokey aroma, and then a nicely balanced dark beer with a smokey flavour created through the malted barley being kilned over a fire of beechwood logs.

This is, as the brewery says, a traditional German approach to brewing beer, but for all my years living in Germany I had not had a Rauchbier. More needed please bartender...

Kilchoman Distillery

Machir Bay Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

I'd still prefer wine after a dry run, but this whiskey sure did hit a spot. The balance and complexity of the Machir Bay is just undeniable, evident from the score achieved here. Fresh, zesty fruits are starkly juxtoposed with pastry-like nutty, creamy vanillin notes. The peat straddles the line between salinity and camp fire smoke. A rockstar finish that just lingers with sweet, malty flavour and a generous sprinkle of salt and pepper. Needs a little air to sort out some initial aggression, but once that settles, I felt nothing was out of place. Best entry-level Islay for me! 2019 bottling here. — 5 years ago

Herbs like from the southern France thyme mixed with plumbs on a slow fire, mix in some truffels, black ripe fruit and there we are with this wine. This is soft, silky and also very fresh. I think it’s now in its drinking window but if this is al there is🤷 you’ll never now! Great wine and I love it! — 6 years ago

Fausto Verve Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2011

Dark inky in color with a short, dirty brick rim.

Strong nose of black currants, cooked plums, oak, licorice, spices, coffee, pencil lead, cola, peppercorn, leather, bone fire smoke, dark chocolates and sweet candy.

Full bodied and soft with medium plus acidity and nice legs.

Dry on the palate with plums, cherries, strawberries, currants, wood, licorice, spices, dark chocolates, black pepper, graphite, peppercorn, leather, vegetables, tobacco and espresso.

Medium plus on the finish with fine grained tannins and tart raspberries.

This is a very nice Brazilian Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Feels like an old world wine.

This 8 year old has a nice mouthfeel, but not fully balanced. The mid palate is very tasty, until the ending, which is a bit too tart for my taste. I actually liked the nose better than the palate.

Needs 90 minutes to open up properly and remove the barnyard notes.

Paired very nicely with food.

Thank you Alex for sharing.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Tannant. Aged in Oak barrels. A small production of only 4250 bottles. This blend was only produced in this 2011 vintage.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

89 points.
