Hang Loose

Domaine Chignard

"Les Moriers" Fleurie Gamay 2022

This is a fun wine. Big, boisterous nose on this. Loads of granitic earthiness up-front and lots of very ripe dark cherry behind. Terrific whack of pure and rich Beaujolais sappy juiciness hits the palate quickly. It’s a little loose and sexy, which is a very good thing, but its open-knit nature lacks a little of the coiled core that would ensure aging. So I’d drink these sooner rather than later for their guilt-free sensory promiscuity. — 5 months ago

Yalumba

The Octavius Barossa Shiraz 2002

There are several previous Delectable notes for this wine. Very rich Ruby in colour. Wonderful aromatics - Plum, spice, mint, garden herbs and coffee grounds - the remnants of a fair bit of oak in its youth. Full bodied and solid even at 20 years. A big Barossa Shiraz from a good cool vintage where there was long hang time for the grapes. Tannins are still M+ but resolving. Still life in this old girl yet! — 4 years ago

Lavaux St. Jacques Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2010

Similar notes from April 2020 when I last had it. A red fruited nose giving a lovely earthy perfume with Sous Bois influences. Loam, compost heap nose. Same red fruits on the medium weight palate with strawberry and a touch of raspberry. As Jasper Morris said in his book, Lavaux St Jacques is one of the cooler sites in Gevrey Chambertin. This is always the last Rousseau wine to be picked and enjoying a longer hang time. After a couple of hours, just a gorgeous nose. — 5 years ago

@Ira Schwartz No the grapes were ripe. Delectable had put the vintage as 2011 which might have misled you. Now changed it to the correct 2010.

Napa Valley Cabernet Franc 2008

In my opinion, this is a pop and pour Cabernet Franc at this moment. I do not believe any additional years in bottle are going to make this one any better. This wine is ready to kick butt. Full bodied, glass coating wine. Nose of black fruit, tar, hint of iodine and some floral notes although the floral has gone from primary to secondary over the years of aging. Palate is rather consistent with the nose, but added some dark cocoa powder towards the finish. Good acidity throughout, but the edges on this wine have definitely softened. Finishes a little bit gritty, which I think is mostly tannin integration. I think this one will hang around for at least another five years. But, this one is drinking most certainly at peak. — 7 years ago

Liaison Pinot Noir 2019

Needs a good day to open up. At first quite brutal in an unyielding way. I left this on my custom Argon line for a week. Reviewed this many times before. Absolutely delicious and driven by earth herbs and hint of red fruits. More or less for aficionados only (I don’t want to be condescending here) as so much patience is required. Drink now because i do not expect the fruit to hang on all that long. — a year ago

2005 vintage. Light-medium/medium bod. Rocking don't bother knocking. So good. At the top of its respective bell curve and looks to hang out for quite some time. Maybe an extended residency? Not going anywhere anytime soon. 12.11.24. — 2 years ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

We decanted and let her warm up from the cellar. Phenomenal as she warmed up and still felt tight and spicy and continued to develop. Reached a massive peak of fullness and complexity faster than expected about 90 minutes after decanting and started to flatten and loose something from there. Final glass to end the evening a full 3 hours later and there was still something there but next time, I would not decant. Rated based on the best drinking period. — 5 years ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

Tight as a drum at open. Loosened to trampoline tension after 2 hours. Finally was loose after 4. Spicy and hefty. More inward. A sophisticated mix and quite good but as with most Leoville Las Cases it needs to sit longer for the next iteration. — 2 years ago

Ironically, I just enjoyed a bottle of this in London and fully agree with your assessment. I am looking forward adding to my cellar. I have ‘82, ‘89, ‘01, ‘05, and ‘16 and it’s obvious that ‘09 needs to be in the mix. Only a couple of years for this juice to step to the next level and maybe
even before ‘05 . Nice find

Not only is this a weekend to remember those who have lost their lives for us, but it’s a sad weekend for me. I lost a longtime friend to cancer yesterday. We went to high school together in Iceland and we both served in the Navy. Normally this would be our weekend to get together and hang out at the pool, drinking beer and listening to 80’s music. RIP Faye I’ll miss you my friend — 4 years ago

La Penitencia Mencía Blend 2011

Raul Perez, Mencia wizard and human garden gnome, makes some of the most innovative and highly allocated wines from anywhere. I don’t often drink stuff this good. Sometimes you need to be reminded that average and good wines are made for relaxation and enjoyment and that extraordinary wines are art.

La penitencia could be the best thing I’ve ever opened at home. It’s elegant and bootlegged. The front label probably designed in an Internet cafe, the back label looks like it was cut and glued by a five year old. These things make it lovable because it’s so bad and it’s so good.

Pours a browned purple motor oil. The aromas fly. Perfumes of red and blue colored berries, clove, spice, leather. Like a brand new catchers mitt that needs some oil and some love. Feels of plush berry fruit and flavors of prunes and macerated strawberries and boxed raisins that seem to hang around for about as many years as I waited to open this thing.
