Il Classico

Monteraponi

Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2019

No formal notes just impressions this evening . This still comes across as really quite young and needs food to show well . Compared to the Il Campitello this is more rustic with higher acidity and grip, however there is good density of fruit here , with the pine resin , sweet red cherry notes turning to strawberry and raspberry with time in the glass . Good length and some grippy still and angular tannins . Needs food but is really an excellent CC. Just kept improving over the 5 hours it was in the glass . — 8 days ago

Castello di Volpaia

Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2021

The nose is intense, intense, ripe cherry, almond, black tea, soy sauce, this is complex and inviting. The palate is acid driven, showing some young and lively tannins, but it's rich, broad, with some matter on the side, cherries and black tea notes, a bowl of a mid palate with that tannic effect, and a long tannic finish with cherry, a tiny salty, savoury note, some black tea and a bit of a zing thzt lasts for a good minute. Good stuff — 20 days ago

Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga

Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2021

Popped and poured; enjoyed with a simple meal of pasta all’arrabbiata and over the course of a few hours. The 2021 pours a deep ruby color with a translucent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of Morello cherry, orange bitters, exotic spices, black tea, black licorice, some dried green herbs and gravely earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and lithe in body. I’ve long been a fan of Fèlsina fan and their Chianti Classico and Riserva especially so. When it’s a great vintage like 2021? Back up the truck. These will drink well through 2031 with ease. I can’t wait to try the CCR! — 12 days ago

Random pick, went very well with vegetable marinara cannelloni. Violet and herb nose. Definitely a food wine. Light lingering finish. — a month ago

Marchesi Antinori

Pèppoli Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2022

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2022 Chianti Classico Pèppoli, the entry-level offering from Antinori, is a fine introduction to the year that shows just how compelling this vintage can be. Bright, floral and beautifully lifted, the 2022 is all class. The understated, refreshing style is so compelling. $21.00 (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2024) — 7 days ago

Ruffino

Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2020

Haven’t had much from Ruffino. Not bad at all, but definitely was hoping for a bit more fruit expression and some better acid on the finish. A bit dusty. — 4 days ago

Very nice with gnocchi. A food wine. Lots of tiny legs streaming down the glass. Wonderful to sip by the Opera Di Santa Maria Del Fiore. — 9 days ago

Tenuta Il Poggione

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2019

2019 opened September ‘24. Unusual nose — briars and turmeric. The light red fruits on the front are quickly subsumed by a complex wave of tannins. I detect dark chocolate in the base notes. Orange zest in the high notes. There’s some other stuff happening in the initial tannic rush that I can’t identify, but they’re yummy. These desperate elements are held together by an initially soft tannic structure — but a stronger mineral component starts at the back of the mid pallet and it provides a long tasty finish.

Personally, I think it was best right out of the bottle. After the first glass, I let it open up for an hour, and it got a little less interesting as some of the.subtleties disappeared — but still very tasty! That suggests to me that it might not hold up to a long cellaring, but I am a bit perverse in that I like my wines young.
