Forja del Salnes

Leirana Ma Luisa Lazaro Albarino 2019

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2019 Mª Luisa Lázaro pours a striking, almost radioactive yellow with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of Meyer lemon, lime, starfruit, Granny Smith apple, sea spray, and rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, creamy and incredibly saline…like…how did they do that?! Spellbinding stuff. Further proof (as if any more was necessary) that Raúl Pérez is a freaking magician. Until now, this wine has only been released three times: 2005, 2013 and 2019. Only 2500 bottles of this ambrosia were made. Drink now through 2039. — 6 days ago

I Ferretti Collezione Friulano 2018

I am not a huge fan of white wines with a floral nose, but in this one it plays very well.  The flowers are subtle, with an overriding minerality coming forward.  That’s where I like my white wines to live.  Aromas of tangerine and lemon zest are abetted by the smell of wet rocks and a trace of what smells to me like oregano.  The palate is all about those minerals, with a subdued citrus flavor along for the ride.  The acidity is great, perfect for something from the ocean.  I paired the I Ferretti with a seafood risotto for dinner, and wished that it was on the table at lunch when I had polpo, a grilled octopus salad. — 4 years ago

Bruno Rocca

Rabajà Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2007

The Rocca family makes Barbaresco wines today from various places, but their Rabajà vineyard is a PRIZED family heirloom, first acquired by Luisa and Francesco’s grandfather in the 1950s. The Nebbiolo vines now have an average age of 50-60 years. 🍇

Here we have the 2007 Bruno Rocca ‘Rabajà’ which is pale garnet in appearance.  Nebbiolo can make unexpectedly pale wines, despite having such a strong structure of tannins & acidity that provide runway for aging in the bottle 👀

As a ‘Barbaresco DOCG’, we know this wine was legally required to undergo extensive aging before release, softening tannins and lending complexity through secondary characteristics. 🪵

Indeed, this wine is layered in aromas and flavors including fig, red plum, black cherry, pomegranate, potpourri, rose, dried orange peel, black licorice, sandalwood, vanilla, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, star anise, tobacco, cigar, forest floor, mushroom, and leather.  It’s gorgeous and in an amazing place 😍

Cheers to the talented Rocca family and the deliciousness of this Rabajà Nebbiolo expression!!

Martinelli

Jackass Vineyard Zinfandel 2011

One of the less desirable vintages and still an amazing wine. Full and rich but balanced and not “hot” at all, which is impressive at 16.5% alcohol. Great example of why Martinelli Ziba can’t be beat, fits nicely between a “fancier” option to Giuseppe and Luisa but not quite as special occasion as Jackass Hill. — 4 years ago
