Ryan Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2023

2023 vintage. Medium-medium heavy body. Old-school RRV swill that eschews the sweetness that crept into the area during the Williams-Selyem heyday/culty scores of the mid-80's to mid-90's. Big tea, earth, light mud, restrained cherry and plum. Structure. Fruit. Balance. No sizzle, all steak. Blind tasting this, you'd be hella pressed to call this as being from RRV. Tastes like it's got 8-10 years of age on it already as a new release. You could sock this away for an easy 15-spot if you're that disciplined, unorganized or behind on opening other stuff. One of the best new domestic pinots tasted in the last few years. P.S...tasted the 2023 MacIntyre (the one that gets all the scores/pub) right after this. It was nice. A new school nice at 9.3. I'll take this any day that ends in "y" instead. You can have my MacIntyre allocation. 3.25.26. — 18 days ago

I love this wine. Nose is gorgeous. Some wood, intense florals and a pastille element. Blackberry, raspberry and so much unreal fruit. On the darker side. Palate is silky and sweet with top top finesse and terrific freshness. Really young but not inaccessible. So pure, so damn refined. A brilliant bottle. A day later this is transcendent. Siky yet rich palate, and gorgeous minerality. Luscious and so juicy. Creamy and long. 9.7. — 2 months ago

Val de Mer Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2023

Presented double-blind at Tasting Group. The wine pours a straw color; medium viscosity with no signs of particles or gas. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tropical fruit, lemon citrus, white and yellow flowers, and slivered almond. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and creamy, leesy. Ooof…another neutral white.

Initial conclusions: this could be Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris from France or the United States. There is no oak (possibly neutral oak but I think it’s lees contact). So I’m going with my gut and calling this Chardonnay, France, Burgundy, Chablis, 2022. Ha! Patrick Piuze is a Chablis producer but this wine uses grapes outside of the zone, hence the Bourgogne Blanc designation. Tricky wine but I’ll take it. Drink now through 2033.

Butteaux Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2023

A little underwhelming and understated. Reads typical but not a ton there. Nice weight and texture with judicious oak use. Tough vintage for Chablis and not a top performer for this producer. — 4 months ago

Terroir de Chablis Chardonnay 2022

Nose is a little reticent at first, giving shy whiffs of Granny Smith apples and crushed rock. Just the barest hint of Chablis “brothiness” as I like to call it. As it airs and warms, it’s a bit more forthcoming. In the mouth it’s on the lighter side, but certainly showing Chablis minerally character. Acids medium low. A nice aperitif Chablis but color me a bit disappointed, for now, given the producer. Will try to check back in after a few hours.

UPDATE: After several hours, showing noticeably more fruit and depth.

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 2018

Chardonnay in its most seductive suit. Pale gold. The nose hasripe pear, lemon curd, and toasted hazelnut, laced with a smoky mineral edge. On the palate, it’s velvet over stone: generous orchard fruit and honeyed cream cut by crystalline acidity and salinity. It was great now but promises even greater depth as it ages. — 6 months ago
