Paul Jaboulet Aîné

La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah

Exceptional wine - deep ruby color with a huge bouquet of violet, plum, black pepper, black cherry, licorice, vanilla, clove, prune and dried rose petal. Velvet tannins, the alcohol is well balanced with the fruit and full-bodied texture. Still in its infancy but already delicious, this wine has a stunning future — 2 months ago

The Velvet Devil Washington State Merlot

Beautiful and very well rounded. Less sweet than I usually like but still so tasty. Very full on the nose- hints of flush red fruit. Nice acidity and tannin balance. — 6 months ago

St. James Winery

Velvet Red Sweet Concord

Sweet at first and then tart to finish. A very good contrast. Not too sweet and not too tart. My favorite wine so far. — 3 years ago

E. Guigal

La Turque Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1990

Valentine dinner in Carmel. Great looking bottle, and right from the get go this wine was showing its stuff. Killer nose. Reddish tawny color. Notes of red and black fruit, cola, smoked meat and dried meat sticks, some wood, some spice and a hint of menthol. Silky and velvet glove texture in the mouth, this was awesome immediately and was at its best over the first 2-3 hours, then it slowly tired after that. Still in a great drinking zone but aging these too much longer may cause the bottles to lose some of what’s making it show so very well today. Great juice! — 4 years ago

Mollydooker Wines

Velvet Glove McLaren Vale Shiraz 2018

The 2018 Mollydooker ‘The Velvet Glove’ Shiraz is a utterly sensational bottling that rivals any wine of its kind. Aged in all new American oak, this shows a gorgeous bouquet from blueberry pie to espresso grounds, graphite and toasty oak tones that all impress. The palate is deep and utterly seamless. A massive core of blue and dark fruits collide with white pepper, minerals, firm tannins and a light dusting of salinity. While obviously big, this has a weightless quality and wonderful verve. Wonderful to enjoy now, this outstanding Shiraz will provide drinking enjoyment for at least another fifteen years. But why wait? Drink 2021-2038- 98 — 4 years ago
