7200 Guillermo Grosso Sangiovese 2014

Holiday vino! This little beauty came in my last shipment from Foxen, one of my favorite producers in Santa Barbara county. The Guillermo Grasso is Foxen’s take on a new world Tuscan - a 50:50 Sangiovese (Faith Vineyard)-Cabernet Sauvignon (Vogelzang Vineyard). 22 months in French Oak - 40% new - gives this wine a hefty punch of tannin and body. While the Vogelzang Vineyard is well known for producing wonderfully complex Cabernet, I’m not as familiar with Faith Vineyard - however a quick Google search shows that the Vineyard, located in Santa Ynez, specializes in Sangiovese and Sauvignon Blanc on a 7 acre plot. Though Foxen recommends cellaring this one for a few years to mellow out - I’m drinking it early. Paired with fish tacos. ~$35 | #foxen #santaynezvalley #supertuscan

On the eyes: Deep, concentrated blood red, bright - but hazy (unfined and unfiltered), med+ stain, med+ tears, no gas.

On the nose: Strawberry, cherry, rose hips, pencil shavings, tobacco, and a bit of earthy funk. Med+ alcohol.

On the tongue: Med+ acid, med+ tannin, med+ alcohol, full body, firm and tight. Red currants, raspberry, floral high notes, cigar box, and worn leather. A bit cloying and rambunctious - it would benefit from a year or two in the cellar, but still very yummy! Decant it and enjoy! Merry Christmas!

Happy Canyon Birdsong Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2014

This is a delightful light juice. It tastes like a light Chardonnay. Not heavy, or buttery. Jennifer thinks it tastes like a good Chardonnay, heavier than a Sauvignon Blanc but not as heavy as a typical CA Chardonnay. Reminds me of a Burgundy Chardonnay. The funny thing is that it's a Sauvignon Blanc!! For Jennifer it's not a light summer drink but more for winter. She would get it again. If this were a Chardonnay we would rate it higher. For Jennifer as a Chardonnay she would rate it a 9 but as a Sauvignon Blanc she gives it a 8.5. — 9 years ago

Etude

Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013

The Fiddlestix Vineyard is located at mile marker 7.28 on Santa Rosa Road in Lompoc, California, which is situated in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. In the mid-90's Kathy Joseph of Fiddlehead Cellars, along with the viticultural icon Taz Steinhauer, acquired the 133-acre, former flower farm, across Santa Rosa Road from the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, and in 1998 they planted 100 acres of Pinot Noir. Aside from the small amount earmarked for Fiddlehead's own production, much of the vineyard is contracted to other producers, including Ampelos, Ancien, Anglim, Arcadian, Bonaccorsi, Dragonette, Jonata, Ken Brown, Hartley-Ostini Hitching Post, Gainey, Ortman, Pali, Paul Lato, Prodigal, RN Estate, Rusack, Summerland, Tyler, Vogelzang, Wedell , and TAZ, not to mention Etude.

Opens with an austere earth note in a tone reminiscent of Barbaresco, and in the words of Miles Raymond, it's "tighter than a nun's ass." 45 minutes later, though, and it's singing and juicy. Black cherry, but not overripe, leads this medium bodied, pungent thinker, while a virtual greenhouse of floral shades help twist and shape its direction. Secondary dusty earth and walnut skin reveal the source of its austerity. True to its terroir, there's a tertiary layer of spice and rocks that provides the depth needed to go from good to great.

Foxen

Toasted Rope Syrah 2013

This Foxen vintage is part of their Rhône style portfolio of wines. It's a co-fermented 82% Syrah and 18% Viognier blend from the Vogelzang vineyard. That unusual pairing leads to some very interesting flavors on the tongue - stone fruit and light red berry in a medium bodied juicy red wine. This one came in my December shipment and is always a wonderfully drinkable wine. ~$44 | #foxen #syrah #santaynez #vogelzang

On the eyes: Day bright crimson red, clear and medium concentration. Med stain, med tears, no gas/floc.

On the nose: A touch of violet and delicate herbaceousness rounded by pluot, mission fig, and toasty notes. Med+ alcohol.

On the tongue: Med tannin, med+ acid, med+ alcohol, med body. Floral, stewed plums, figs, and red currents with a clean oaky finish. A nice Rhône style that's a bit chewy with a lovely long finish.

Foxen

7200 Volpino Sangiovese Blend 2012

The Foxen Volpino, or "little fox", is a 78% Sangiovese - 22% Merlot blend. The merlot hails from Vogelzang located in Happy Canyon AVA, but I'm not sure where the sangiovese is sourced. Either way, the wine is one of the 7200's "caltalian" blends that, if available, can be poured for you in the winery's "Shack" tasting room. The shack is an adorable bare bones structure located off the Foxen Canyon Road surrounded by old world charms and stunning vistas, full of sassy sommeliers and attendants. Not fined or filtered, the grapes and barrels do the talking and deliver a fine new world example of an old world staple. ~$32 | #foxen #volpino #caltalian

On the eyes: Bright, garnet, burnt orange color, med+ stain, med+ tears, no gas, floc present.

On the nose: Vinous, cassis, blackberry, tobacco, mint, hints of petrol, med+ alcohol.

On the tongue: high acid, med+ tannin, med+ alcohol, med round body. Juicy, black cherry, current jam, a tinge of pressed meats, then leather yielding to oak and smoke. A very serviceable table wine - still young, wait another a year or two as it starts to come into its own.
