Special Club Chouilly Grand Cru Champagne 2015

David T
9.4

Beautiful. Much softer and rounder than the 16 Oger Grand Cru Special Club.

The mousse is fantastic…smooth as silk…micro oxygenation.

Lightly, bruised, red & green apple, pear, tones of apple cider, citrus blend-lime led, pineapple juice, notes of ginger-ale, shades of hues of brown sugar, cream, some bread dough, baguette crust, light yeastiness, perfect chalkiness, alluvial limestone, saline, sea fossils, soft white pepper, yellow lilies, spring flowers, soft, lively, perfect acidity and a beautiful two-minutes finish that encompasses; incredible balance, tension, structure and master woven.

The “Chouilly Grand Cru” Millésimé is the only vintage that comes from several plots, but from a single place called “Montaigu”. Its style represents the archetype of fine, delicate and creamy “blanc de Blancs” Champagne. It is made from several plots..12 hectares. 60 months on lees. They are an original member of the Club Trésors de Champagne.

That’s 2016 Oger needs to relax. It’s a bright ball of energy and needs time to chill out and relax.

Like the purity and how clean their cuvées are. Both deserve time in the cellar.

Forster Riesling 2020

A beautiful Pfalz Riesling archetype.
Sweet, rich & exotic on the nose with ripe yellow peaches, candied pineapple, tangerine zest. Ripe & broad but there’s great freshness, coming from a cool, mineral, slightly smoky underscore.
On the palate this shows rich breadth but there’s also great balance & depth, either the volcanic, spicy minerality adding a nice counterbalance to the ripe, sweet yellow fruit. Opulent yet juicy and dangerously drinkable. This is yum!

Riserva Rancia Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2018

Delectable Wine
9.7

The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is an absolutely stunning wine. The archetype of Rancia in the past has been of a big, potent Chianti Classico but in 2018, Rancia is a wine of mind-blowing elegance and finesse. Silky, perfumed and indescribably finessed, the 2018 dazzles from start to finish. It's a magical wine in every way. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2021)

The archetype for Sangiovese. Super deep, layered full of flavor and energy. Camphor, grilled herbs, black fruits, meaty lavender. Campfire smoke. Killer. — 4 years ago

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

Medium garnet, the 2001 Château Léoville Barton is an archetype for cooler vintage, aristocratic left bank Bordeaux. It offers well-defined aromas of blackcurrant, dried black cherry, wood spice, mushroom, forest floor, tobacco and gravel. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is dominated by a massive tannin structure, excellent fruit concentration and a long, persistent finish. Drink now until 2030. — 2 years ago

Zenato

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Corvina Blend 2017

Very Soft apple cider. Maple wood, the “milk” in milk chocolate, not the “lavender” in lavender, but the “milk” of lavender? Whatever it is, there is like a floral or herbal substance or spirit animating the flavour that’s carried by the “milk chocolate”. Some kind of cucumberism?

Lots of complexities to this despite being a red blend. I guess, maybe that explains the encompassing or hard-to-nail flavours. It’s an archetype or an ensemble rather than something singular. That said it’s got plenty of personality.
