Australian Red

Elderton

Command Single Vineyard Shiraz 1998

Popped and poured, enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The 1998 “Command” pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity and moderate staining of the tears. Definitely some fine sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and mostly dried black and red fruits: brambles, blueberries, blackberries, dates, grilled meat, leather, purple flowers, marjoram, earth and soft baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin (mostly integrated) and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose with the addition of an umami/Maillard reaction sort of thing giving a rich, savory finish. Drink now as it’s in slow decline. — 2 days ago

Two Hands

Gnarly Dudes Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021

After Thorne shotfire barossa shiraz which was round, very oaky and lacking a bit of acid, I wanted another expression of the same varietal from the same region, but with more zing to it.
Boy this one is zingy!
The nose is showing blackberry, black pepper, a tiny soy sauce note along with an eucalyptus thing. This is very inviting and quite complex! The palate shows a massive acid drive, extremely powerful, but not overpowering at all. A big and bright blackberry note shines through and through, some width, some matter on the sides, a silky mouthfeel that turns into a great tannic wall in the rear with a strong grip and a drying effect that continues till the very end. The finish is all about blackberry and a reminiscence of that eucalyptus /mentholy note that could be felt on the nose. The finish is long and the after taste of blackberry keeps on for almost a minute. Great take on Australian Shiraz, without the artificial, sometimes overwhelming oak treatment. I like it very much. Two hands deserve a high five!

Penfolds

Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

A dense Ruby in colour. Black currant, dark plum, mocha, dark chocolate, and cigar box. The Penfolds Cabernet DNA if you like. Dense and powerful. This wine at 20 years of age is just a pup. The “Rewards of Patience “ has a window to 2045+. I’ll probably have the next one in 10 years or so. The release price of the latest vintage is now over $600 - too expensive IMO. Apparently substantial material from the old Block 42 in the blend - planted in the 1880’s. — 7 days ago

@Bob McDonald, first time I ever tasted this wine was at the New York Wine Experience in either 1985 or 1986 — it was the 1982 vintage, loved it and bought a case (for $20 or so per bottle). Wonderful wine, but long ago consumed, since I didn’t know these were 30-50 year wines. Ah well, live and learn (though my 1982 Dunn Howell Mountain Cab looks like it might last past my own lifespan, and I also bought that in my 20s) — LOL!!

@Doug Powers An interesting story Doug. 1982 was an excellent vintage as well. A good purchase!

Layered, complex, beautiful. Opens with cherries, blood, plums, blueberries, dry leaves and licorice. Fine grained tannins. Perfect after a few hours in the decanter. Will last at least another decade. — 8 days ago

Bin 28 Kalimna South Australia Shiraz 2010

A little cold to begin with. After it warmed up - Liquorice, Plum and Blackberry. Such a strong wine - full bodied - plenty of everything. Drinking window up to 2035 according to Penfolds. At the moment this tastes young at 14 years of age. The next one is many years away. — a month ago

Clonakilla

Canberra District Shiraz Viognier 2013

Initially oak aromas which blew off. Indian spices - more savoury than fruity. Balanced. More than a nod to the Northern Rhone in its structure and tasting profile. A trace of white pepper. Always the best Shiraz Viognier in Australia from Murrumbateman near Canberra. Understated yet delicious. Superb. Perhaps not as spicy fragrant as the really great Clonakilla Shiraz Viogniers of earlier years but with a very long life ahead, like up to 2040 who knows how good the perfume will be then? — 18 days ago
