Blood Of The Earth

Domaine Serene

Evenstad Reserve Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2011

#AgedWineTuesday

Reddish in color with a wide reddish rim and medium intensity. Pretty color.

Strong nose of red fruits with earth, light wood, light Mediterranean spices, mushrooms, earth and herbs.

Light to medium in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with raspberries, cherries, spices, light oak, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, spices, light green tea and earth.

Nice finish with soft tannins and tangy cranberries.

This is a delicious 15 year old Pinot Noir from Oregon. Nicely balanced and elegant.

Feels like a red Burgundy, which I loved. Complex and interesting. Tangy and spicy.

I've had a few vintages of this wine and it is very consistent. Drinking beautifully now, and will continue to do so in the next 10 years.

Wine Enthusiasts 91 points.

Easy drinking, and good by itself or with food.

Pinot Noir grapes were aged in (55% new) French oak barrels for 15 months.

13.1% alcohol by volume.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2002

Absolutely lovely classic left bank. 2002 was a less heralded year, but this has stood up extremely well. Just getting to secondary now, still a ton of fruit and earth and leather on the nose and palate. Excellent acid and a very long finish. 13% which is appreciated and the seamlessness comes through. Really delicious and a perfect Thanksgiving meal pairing. Opened 5 hours before dinner and decanted for 1.5 hours. Perfect spot. — a month ago

Clos des Papes

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2007

Opened several hours prior to service, the 2007 pours a deep, ruby/purple color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated bramble berries, strawberry, dried red flowers, garrigue, anise, leather, dried herbs and stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. This is anything but tired and far from overblown. I’ve been surprised by a number of 2007 CdP’s lately. They have showed better balance than I expected and this one is wonderfully balanced. Drink now through 2037. — 2 days ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

A knockout left bank Bordeaux. I’ve read that the 2005s may go longer than the potentially even more vaunted 2000s and I might agree based on this bottle. Decanted 5 hours. Cork in perfect shape. Amazing depth of fruit and a ton of Bordeaux earth. Nose goes on and on as does the finish. Was an excellent pairing but a very good but simple roast chicken. — 2 months ago

Valdicava

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2009

Dark and murky ruby color with a slight garnet rim. Aromas of leather, ripe black cherry and a good deal of barnyard funk. Flavors of earth, coffee, mushrooms with a very slight amount of dried black cherry fruit. Finish is a bit bitter but the wine is still well balanced. Exceptionally tertiary with well softened tannins. Frankly, this wine was fine (if you can accept the lower fruit levels) but I was (it was not flawed) honestly expecting more from this highly regarded producer. — 2 months ago

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Hermitage Syrah 1997

The pinnacle of Syrah.

It opens with smoked meat, dried black olive, leather, and stone.

The palate is graceful and savory, where fading dark fruit, iron, and earth glide on silken, fully melted tannins.

Legendary Hermitage!

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

The nose is profoundly layered and regal: cedar chest, humid tobacco, graphite, and dried rose petals, unfolding slowly into red currant, black tea, sandalwood, and the faintest whisper of truffle and old parchment. It’s not about intensity; it’s about dimension…

On the palate, it is seamless and sovereign. Red and black fruits are fully resolved into essence rather than flavor; currant, cherry skin, a touch of plum; all wrapped in polished leather and earth. The tannins have dissolved into silk, the acidity remains statuesque, and the finish lingers with a calm, noble persistence that feels endless rather than long.

Chateau Margaux at its absolute summit: complete, composed, and eternal; power expressed through grace, and grace sharpened by the patience of time. Do drink now.

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Popped and poured; enjoyed from red Solo cups over the course of a few hours. This bottle of the 1982 showed very well today. It pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and fine sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with beautiful notes of black currants, black plum, mixed brambles, tobacco, some green pepper, graphite, leather, earth, and soft warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin (integrated) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. 1982: the vintage that keeps on giving. Drink now through 2042+. — 3 months ago
