Flint & Steel

Domaine François Raveneau

Valmur Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2014

Quite light straw . Very complex and taut on the nose , with crushed shells , touch of honied citrus fruits , gun flint , green apple , camomile . On the palate this is very mineral and intense with chalk dust and citrus , apple peel , really long and mineral . Good volume but really excellent balance . Perfect fresh acidity, and saline mineral intensity on the finish . Really young still but so good at the moment , though will continue on like this , probably improving for a further decade at least . Restaurant Drouant , Paris . — 3 days ago

Les Romains Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Delectable Wine
9.1

Les Romains is a vineyard with its feet in flint to the east of the fault line in Sancerre. The 2020 Sancerre Les Romains begins with a fruity and open welcome, blossoming and silken in the mouth before tying the wine up; the flint influence acts like the belt on a pair of trousers tightening up the middle and leaving a sensation of sinew and length with a fine nettley fragrance. Les Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2012

I haven’t had a lot of aged Chablis, but this is drinking remarkably well for being 13 years old. Austere; high acid but with some weight to it. Flint and lemon peel but I would wager this saw at least some oak as there is definitely a little butterscotch in the background both in the nose and palate. Drinks like a lighter more restrained Montrachet. — 2 months ago

Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2022

There’s nothing basic about this Bourgogne Blanc!

It’s absolutely lovely. With elegant notes of fresh white peach, nectarine, yellow apple, apricot, lemon peel, citrus blossom, chalk, wet slate, salinity, and sapidity; also, delicate cream, flintiness, and cheese rind notes and perhaps a touch of reduction, presenting as struck match. The palate is dry, with medium alcohol (13%), medium (+) acidity.

It fermented with wild yeasts and aged 11 months in a combination of barrels and stainless steel, followed by an addition 7 months in stainless steel tanks.

This wine has verve and vibrancy and is positively delicious.

Cheers to beautiful Bourgogne Blanc wines to write home about!!

Thierry et Pascale Matrot

Meursault-Charmes 1er Cru Chardonnay 2014

This is the Pascale Matrot not the Pierre Matrot Charmes Meursault. I have previous notes here on both Cuvées. A strange charcoal note initially which wasn’t there on the 2nd day. Pale to mid yellow in colour Flint and citrus with yellow orchard fruits developing. River stones. Very mineral together with pear on the medium weight palate. An excellent Premier Cru Meursault from a great vintage for White Burgundy. — 3 years ago

Soave Classico Garganega

2023 vintage.
To say this is entry level Soave would do it no justice.
Garanega grapes from 30 year old vines grown in Basaltic volcanic soil. 100 % stainless steel production.
Shiny green gold in colour.
Mineral driven with notes of wild yellow flowers, golden apples, marzipan and almonds.
Crisp acidity on the finish.
This wine begs for scallops regardless how you prepare them.

9.5

Fantastic wine. On the nose an intense mixture of floral, stone fruit, raspberries, lemon oil, some flint - so much power. Concentration of a grand cru white burgundy. I would say hold for some time to let this develop further. Amazing wine in the making. Precise, powerful. — 3 years ago
