Domaine du Pegau

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2010

On the eye it’s definitely showing some age and sediment. The nose is dusty, leathery, and smokey with blueberry and plum. The pallet is earthy and well integrated upfront. No outliers just beautiful flow: mushroom, game, dark fruit, some vanilla, still bold, low alcohol, medium tannic and round finish.

This bottle and I have history; after ten years of carrying it, babying it, and nurturing it. I decided to pop it open for my forty second nameday. Could have gone several more years, easy, but it was perfect timing for me, and this is why I love wine. Cheers.

Sounds good. Happy Birthday. I have had some Brett problems with this Cuvée from the 2006 vintage.

Arpatin

Barolo Nebbiolo 2013

2013 hoists this producer stratospherically. Great wine with integrated tannins. Meaty nose of cured and sliced roast beef and black pepper; tinged brown-brick from its 10 year slumber; cigar wrap, and roulade, graphite and smoke, and just barely, dried, black mushroom and rose petal. The palate is lush. Cherry soft, raspberry reduction, shows round but pronounced tannic dunes. Our tar is integrated, chicory peeks forth, the pepper submerged in a perfect expression of varietal and vintage. Solid work Arpatin (winks at Mother Nature)!

Highlands Forty One

Monterey County Pinot Noir 2020

This Monterey County Pinot Noir is fairly dark and very fragrant in the glass. Aromas of black cherry, black tea, licorice and cinnamon put together the kind of display that makes me think of the holidays. Dark fruit dominates the palate, and a full set of tannins accompany the juicy sip. The Los Angeles-based Riboli family recommends pairing their Highlands 41 Pinot with grilled sausage, pasta primavera, baked salmon or roasted duck. I would toss in turkey and ham as excellent pairings. I had mine with lemon and honey Wensleydale cheese, and it was beautiful. — 3 years ago
