Castellare is a winery to always buy when you see it. We live 20 mins away in Panzano. We enjoy this Vin Santo. It’s yummy in my cakes too!! — 3 years ago
2021/4/29-30 with Nanjing saltwater duck, etc. Normally I don’t go for wines with international varieties from places like Chianti (and Panzano no less), but I came across this without knowing what was in it and had been wanting to try something from Montefili. It was pretty good - and the Cabernet Franc (which might be my favorite of the French varieties in Tuscany due to Ampeleia) hit the spot when I wanted something to go with duck. It had the brambly cassis and green tobacco, with some cherry from the Sangiovese. Was best on day 1 - was a little plain on day 2. — 5 years ago

Owned by the family since the early 70s, estate is located in the village of San Leolino, near Panzano in Chianti. A blend of 50% Cab Sauv, 35% Petit Verdot & 15% Cab Franc, aromas of fruit and floral notes. On the palate raspberry and cranberry flavors with some herbal notes. Firm tannins, good balance ending with earthy mineral character. — 7 years ago
Beautiful color, does not seem 15 years old. Deep mix of garnet and ruby in the core with some brick on the edges. Lovely aged characteristics on the nose with notes of leather, a bit dirty, meaty, dark dried cocoa, blackberries, herbs, earthy, cigar box and olives. Love the nose. Medium tannins (6/10), so smooth and well integrated with a medium plus body. Solid acidity and Tons of layers on the palate, tobacco, cherries, leather and some earthiness. Dry and long finish. Drink till 2020. Strong 92..
From what I have found I believe this is made up of 50% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot (first vintage with this much merlot), 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. Fruit comes from Conca d’Oro in Panzano from Chianti. 2003 was a difficult vintage for La Massa, only producing around 35,000 bottles of their flagship compared to the usual 75,000. Aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, 10 of those are on the lees. Delicious bottling. Purchased through #WineBid for $45.00 compared to its average of $80.00. — 8 years ago
Lovely Grand Selezion from Panzano. Had this year ago and it wasn't ready back then. Sharp edge has rounded and now it's good to go. Some vanilla notes from barrique but well integrated. — 9 years ago
See: dark red
Smell: dark cherry
Taste: cherry, earthy, tobacco, pepper, high body, not sweet
Acidity: high
Tannins: high — a year ago
Winery is located in the heart of Chianti Classico in the valley which lies south of the town of Panzano and is called the "Conca d’Oro" (the golden shell) because of its amphitheatre shape. Deep Ruby with aromas of dried fruits and oak notes, 18 months of French oak aging. On the palate flavors of sweet cherry with tobacco and floral tones. Fine sweet tannins, vivid acidity, well balanced, long finish ending with earthy mineral character, 15% alcohol, nice mouthfeel. Pricy but one of the best I’ve tasted, consistent. — 4 years ago
One of our favorites from Panzano where we have had a home for 20 years. Vicki and Guido are the best. Their oil is one of the best in Panzano too! — 5 years ago

Had this over a year ago, still tasting great. Located in the heart of Chianti Classico in the valley which lies south of the town of Panzano, called the "Conca d’Oro" (the golden shell) because of its amphitheatre shape. Aged for 12 months in oak, big ripe berry aromas & spicy notes. On the palate dark berry flavors, some sweet currants, cacao and oak. Well balanced with soft smooth tannins, lingering ending with smoky tones. Nice! Grab a bottle if you find one! — 7 years ago
CVed 1/26/18. First of three. Nose of red fruits and earth. Palate that's acidic yet silky, good texture and lively. Medium finish. Gordon's $18 good value. Opened 1/12/24! Found in stash, tasting very nicely six years after poke, a record! — 8 years ago

This is my 3000th tasting note on Delectable so I suppose I should celebrate by opening something fun. Flaccianello? Ovviamente!
While it’s labeled an IGT and colloquially considered a Super Tuscan, Flaccianello delle Pieve could legally be labeled as a Chianti Classico Riserva. However, Giovanni Manetti of Azienda Agricola Fontodi opts not to do so (despite the fact that he’s the current Chairman of the Conzorsio). The name, “Flaccianello delle Pieve” comes from the eponymous single-vineyard; the original source of grapes. However, around the turn of the millennium, Flaccianello became a blend of Fontodi’s best fruit throughout the estate. Over all the years, despite the changes in fruit source and aging regimen, Flaccianello remains 100% Sangiovese and 100% Panzano in Chianti.
Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple of hours. The 2011 pours a deep, translucent garnet with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and some signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and dried Morello cherry, raspberries, red flowers, leather, mushrooms, cigar box, menthol, organic earth and wonderful fine baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acidity. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, delicious and warming as the alcohol is pretty elevated. But whoa…what a beauty.
Okay, yeah…this is a modern take on Chianti Classico but my goodness, this is undeniably delicious and unabashedly Italian. Back in 2011, Flaccianello was aged in a combination of barriques from Troncais and Allier, all 100% new; an era that was arguably the most modern for this wine. Over the last 10 or so years however, there has been a shift towards less time in new barrique and large casks have now been introduced for the last six months of cellar aging. While I look forward to trying some of these more contemporary examples, I am very impressed with this 2011 and expect it will continue to show well through 2035. — 2 years ago

Gorgeous Brdx blend from the heart of Chianti Classico area, Panzano. Ready to drink after opened for a day. Last sips after 6 days. Amarena cherry, cassis, flowers on the nose. Dusty tannins and long taste. — 6 years ago
Full bodied and definitely Tuscan. Sangiovese and Merlot blend from Panzano, heart of Chianti. Great QPR. — 8 years ago
Villa Cafaggio Cortaccio. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A nice garnet colour in the glass. This 2008 is lovely. From the Panzano Estate, this wine was aged for 18 months in new French Oak. The result? A well balanced Tuscan Cabernet that delivers flavours of leather, tobacco, herbs and some earthiness. Well balanced acidity and tannins. Lovely wine.
