Domaine du Pegau

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 1990

Another absolutely fabulous older CdP, I saw @Jay Kline’s excellent tasting note from a few years ago on the 1990 (thanks for the info, @Jay Kline!!), this is amazing, amazingly a little better than the 1989 Beaucastel, what a trio of 1988-1990 CdPs!!! — 4 days ago

@Jay Kline, my brother and I visited Laurence once, in 2005, what a phenomenal lady she was, climbing all over barrels to get samples, we finished with the very youthful 2004, we both thought it great, and she said she wasn’t sure at that point about the 2004!! Great visit!!

Casa Emma

Gran Selezione Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2016

The precision and pencil lead generated a Bordeaux vibe-driven Sangiovese that was so long and perfectly tart I was tasting this half hour after the last drop. Majestic sour cherries in one of the nicest CC-GSs I’ve ever had. Needed 45 min decant. Props to @Jay Kline on this one: “Bravissimo” indeed! — 3 years ago

Cimarossa

Rive di Cimarossa Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Cimarossa, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rive di Cimarossa. Vintage 2011. ABV 14.20%.

This wine is deep ruby with garnet secondary hues. On the nose this wine has medium(+) intensity of developing aromas. Aromas include blackberry preserves, black cherry, dried prune, fig, also black pepper, molasses, cedar, tobacco, mocha, cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, earth, and wet moss. On the palate this wine is dry. It has medium acidity, a full body, high alcohol, firm (high) tannins, and medium(+) intensity of flavors consistent with the nose but with delicate vegetal notes. The baking spice is also very prominent. The finish is long.

The 2011 vintage in Napa Valley was on the wetter and cooler side, which offered an extended growing season allowing the grapes to ripen and develop slowly. This wine comes from a vineyard located in Howell Mountain, on the Northeastern side of the Vaca Mountains, which afforded it additional exposure to winds that kept the vines dry and sunshine which aided in the ripening process.

Fun fact! Howell Mountain legally became its own appellation in 1983, the year of my birth, making this Howell Mountain Cab a fine choice for a Birthday weekend (there’s always a connection).

In addition to owning this spectacular winery, owners Corry Dekker and Dino Dina both come from an impressive background in medicine and biotechnology and have left, and continue to leave, an indelible impact on the vaccine industry. Cheers to that!! And cheers to Mia Kline for her excellence in winemaking and fruit expression.

This label features an image of the yellow monkeyflower, a wild flower that grows along the edges of the vineyard from which this wine comes.

This is a killer visit. Wonderful atmosphere. And their 2011 wines are some of my favorites.

23 such a great white vintage. Raise a hand if you prefer White Burgundy over Ca Chardonnay.

I commented on
@Jay Kline or @Andrew Cullimore post that I really love this producers style. It is distinctive to me. It’s elegant, lush and plush. Their wines wire to wire have such beauty and elegant consistency

The nose is inviting with lime-skin (inside & out)- pulp, juice, Meyer lemon skin-pulp, kiwi, pineapple, tropical melons, herbaceous, volcanics, mint, deep chalkiness, sea spray, sea fossils, gentle white spice, cream, caramel, sunflowers, white spring flowers & jasmine.

The mouthfeel is round, lush, viscous & somewhat waxy. Lime-skin (inside & out)-pulp, juice, Meyer lemon skin-pulp, kiwi, pineapple, tropical melons, herbaceous notes, toast, volcanics, mint, deep chalky powder, saline, sea fossils, dry twig, soft oak powder, limestone marl, gentle white spice w/ palate heat, cream, caramel, sunflowers, white spring flowers & jasmine, waterfall acidity, well balanced, nicely tensioned /structured, good length and a beautiful, elegant 90 second finish that sets on white spice and minerals.

In 2015, my wife and I spent the morning & afternoon w/ Olivier touring the vineyards, cellar and then had a long lunch tasting 8 of his wines. Absolute gentleman. Always wearing his signature a ferdor hat.

Fantastic. Relatively light bodied pilot a Pinot noir but full of flavor and just dry enough. Used this in the coq au vin (and also drank it) when Zach Amanda Seán and Shayne cane over for dinner. — 6 years ago

Bérêche & Fils

Brut Réserve Champagne Blend

Enjoying this knowing my Cornhuskers already punched their ticket to their first ever Sweet 16 last night in one of the games of the tournament so far.

At this point, it’s a “pick’em” between the Bérêche Brut Réserve and Caillez-Lemaire’s “Éclats” for the title of, “Kline Fam house Champagne”. They just delivery in the way I want/trust/expect and can afford. This is the November 2025 disgorgement. Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of three hours. The Brut Réserve pours a straw color with a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of apple, pineapple, raspberry, lemon curd, brioche, marzipan, and a mix of chalk and limestone minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and laden with minerals. So easy to love. Drink now but you can hold for many years if you want as well.

Au Paradis Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

2013 vintage. Decanted and tasted after two hours. Medium body. Leaning heavily towards a feminine-styled Cabernet and has dropped nearly all of the braggadocio of youth. As mentioned with another reviewer @Jay Kline not even close to being as exciting as the producer’s Les Pavots bottling and fairly one-dimensional. More than a bit disappointing given the initial acclaim. 05.29.25. — a year ago
