A Terry Theise Estate Selection Steiner Hund Riesling 2023

Steiner Winery – Tokaji Szamorodni 2023
Kerestir, Tokaj – Hungary 🇭🇺

Overview
Crafted from Furmint, Tokaj’s signature white grape, this Szamorodni (“as it comes”) style wine is made from whole clusters that include both healthy and botrytised berries. The 2023 vintage reflects Tokaj’s historic winemaking approach — balancing richness from noble rot with freshness from the grape’s high acidity.

Aromas & Flavors
Golden in hue, with aromas of honeyed apricot, candied citrus, quince, and baked apple. Layers of dried fruit, beeswax, and a touch of marmalade emerge, with subtle vanilla and spice from oak aging.

Mouthfeel
Lush and textured, with sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity. Medium to full-bodied, carrying both weight and lift, and finishing long with lingering notes of fruit and honeyed spice.

Food Pairings
Excellent with foie gras, pâté, or blue cheese. Also a lovely match for fruit tarts, apricot galette, or simply enjoyed as a dessert wine on its own.

Verdict
A classic Szamorodni that bridges richness and freshness. Steiner’s 2023 bottling captures Tokaj’s dual nature: opulent yet lively, sweet yet balanced, making it both indulgent now and promising for short-term aging. 🍷

Did You Know?
Furmint, the grape behind this Szamorodni, is prized for its natural high acidity and ability to develop noble rot. It’s the backbone of Tokaj’s world-famous sweet wines, from late harvest to Aszú.

Such a hard wine to get hold of this was
Not necessarily expensive, but it has such a long story behind that i can't even start
If you know Elisabetta Foradori this guy, mr Zierock, was her first husband and probably not a well mannered either
He was a strong biodynamic Steiner believer for my understanding and i truly thought this wine was going to be just off for some silly reason
On the other hand i find still a crisp fruit, there definitely been skin contact, such a chalky mineral that emphasises the ginger, the smokiness, the honeycomb and the very long after taste
Better when room temperature
I just cant believe that the legend of the Alps mountains has actually delivered so well
Just hope we could all think twice before putting anything else than fermented grape juice into winemaking
A very special bottle i had been holding on for such a long time..a real treasure..exciting emotion!!

This was from the time when the French were saying California wines wouldn’t age. The label says it should have “a long life approaching 20 years”. It’s delicious at 40. Laurel Glen and Steiner vineyard grapes. — 6 years ago

Steiner Hund Riesling 2019

Straw golden in colour yet this is no Spätlese.
Puristic, pure and stony mineral in the nose - slate, warm stones, a salty whiff and only far in the back - a piece of white peach, a slice of underripe pineapple, a few drops of honey.
Clean as a whistle and so fresh.
On the palate this is tightly wound and with great focus & depth, yet this has some substance & weight, too.
White peach, apricots, white pear and some rye toast. And lots of stones. And some white tea like tannins. And a very long, mineral, pure, beautiful finish, that leaves a hint of creaminess in the after taste.
What a beautiful, complete & complex wine!

Grapes from best sites around Heiligenstein of the former Steiner Allerheiligenstiftung, a religious foundation dating back to 1171! Able to taste ‘17&’18 side by side. Very Fragrant, more so than ‘17, aromas of stone fruits and spicy notes. On the palate plum, pear and citrus flavors with zesty spice. Medium+ length ending with vigor on an expressive fruit finish, good balance. Nice value. Tasting Sample. — 6 years ago
