Château La Lagune

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

Christmas Day. Another wonderful experience with 1989 Bordeaux, this time La Lagune from the Haut-Médoc, a wine that is particularly ageworthy and on this occasion absolutely singing. Fresh, sappy fruit and youthful vigour on the palate, this was a clean, pristine bottle and utterly drinkable – it just about lasted throughout dinner. — 11 days ago

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Happy New Year Delectable!

Double decant and pour. A splendid tawny red color. On the nose: dark fruit, cigar ash, cedar, smoked meat, pencil shavings, mint. Taste: soft, silky, elegant, still fresh wine with dark red fruit, worn leather, graphite, loamy soil, spiced herbs, minty black tea and a dry medium finish. YUM! What a fun wine to end 2024 with. A wine bought at auction, and a cork which was not in the best shape, so not sure if this is a true representation of where this wine is at.

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

My crazy BIL did it again. Same rating with one add’l thought: 20+ years to go but divine now with decant.
“Lithe, feminine nose led a nicely delineated palate of dark red fruit, cigar box and velvety tannins. Wonderful.”

Château Duhart Milon

Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot Blend 1993

Presented double-blind. The wine pours a slightly translucent garnet with an orange rim; medium viscosity with moderate staining and some signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of dried and ripe, red and black fruits: brambles, Bing cherry, old wood and old leather bound books, baking chocolate, grated nutmeg, organic earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ (resolved) tannins and medium+ acidity. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Called Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend from France, Bordeaux, Left Bank, Medoc, 1990. LOL…that’s pretty close! For those wondering, the bottle was opened and decanted for sediment several hours prior. For my palate, Duhart-Milon needs decades to become interesting. Fully mature now though, this has at least a decade of enjoyable life left. — 8 days ago

Château Meyney

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

What a wonderful surprise; this wine was fantastic and seemed like a young wine not 36 years old. The color was red rim to rim no bricking at all and I kept looking at it wondering why considering its age. The nose and taste were both very integrated with lead pencil, a lot of dark fruits and a bit of spice. What also got me was the finish, just went on forever and so very smooth. I’m sure this wine would last a few more years but why wait; drinking so great right now.

I decanted the wine about 6 PM. My wine opener just drilled a hole in the fragile cork so decanted through a tea strainer into my to-go bottle and other then the cork bits there was very little sediment. Started drinking the wine about 9 PM with NYE Dinner at Anthony’s in Haddon Height.

Opened the bottle several hours in advance. Great tannic structure, still lots of fruit and some secondary flavors; nothing tertiary yet. Try again in a few years but great now — 6 days ago

My go to Bordeaux classic. Small black fruits, tobacco, cigar boxes and the ever present stubborn dusty bitter note. — 6 days ago

Château Margaux

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2002

What a year. What a wine to close the year. Margaux magnum. Color is still vibrant. The nose takes time to evoke forest notes, along with dark and red berries, graphite, and hints violet and vanilla. On the palate the wine is incredibly balanced. Dark cherry, plum and cassis predominate but secondary notes of leather and mocha quickly follow. The acidity is palpable. The finish is long with setting flavors of ripe dark fruit. Cheers our evolving palates in 2025. — 7 days ago

Château Cantemerle

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Start out incredibly rich and concentrated, and with tongue coating tans, but after a couple of hours really opened up to show some delicate fruit and savory flavors. The nose also started out incredibly intense and a little jammy, but cleared with time to become something much more delicate and lovely with flowers and cold fruits and Deliciousness. — 7 days ago
