Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

2022 vintage. Nice enuff in the front and mid-palates with plenty of fruit, spice and richness. Dwindles on the finish and, like nearly all 2022's from Napa, missing that kapow/blammo at the end. 8.19.26. Missed the 2021 and haven't seen the 2023 but feel like they'll come through with the goods. 8.19.26. — 5 days ago

Château Cos Labory

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

A spicy, herbal nose with notes of tar, bay leaves, overripe blueberry, meaty notes like iron, a nose that smells of pine, with an underlying freshness that’s welcoming, cutting through the heavily perfumed nose. The body is medium, with prominent grippy tannins that show the youth, with prominent blueberry, a little black cherry, with spicy energy, tar, underripe balsamic, herbs de Provence, graphite and a looong finish. I really enjoyed this, and a great first step for St. Estephe. — a day ago

Réserve Brut Champagne Blend

NV. Along with the Philipponnat Réserve Perpétuelle Brut, this is slaying it in that resto cost sub-$50 USD range currently. A little more green appley than the Philipponnat but still banging for the ca$hi$h. Did I mention 1/2 bottle availability? 8.19.26. — 5 days ago

Screaming Eagle

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 1997

In an evening of pleasant surprises, this may have been the biggest of them all. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been, but looking at the lineup of legends, can one blame me? Screaming Eagle is one of those wines you read about but rarely see, let alone get an opportunity to drink. An expensive, cult Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville? Hardly original these days (though it could be argued that Screaming Eagle was the OG for the “category”). But, this was not some anonymous OTT Napa Cab. This was a brilliant, impeccably balanced, varietally correct expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville and perhaps, one of the best I’ve ever had.

The 1997 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing (still) and utterly brilliant with perfectly wisened black currants, brambles, dried leaf, tobacco, Poblano pepper, purple flowers, salmiakki, a lovely mix of cool and warm spices and organic earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, silky and punctuated with pleasant minerals. Looking at the label and seeing 13.8% ABV brings a smile to my face. This wine has remarkable confidence. To say I’m impressed would be a gross understatement. I’m smitten. Drink now with some air and enjoy through 2047+.

Château Angélus

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

2 hour decant(lots of chunky sediment). A gorgeous dark purplish garnet color. On the nose: Intoxicating notes of ripe dark fruit, forest floor, pencil shavings, herbaceous, smokey oak, minty chocolate. Taste: silky, rich, dense wine with dark cherry/plum, dark chocolate espresso, licorice, and a very spiced graphite/sour cherry never ending finish. YUM! Drinks nicely with the decant and many years to go. — a day ago
