Anchors Away

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1981

It probably would have been better a few years ago, but still a good drink. Still some tannins, but they went away as it had time to breathe — 2 months ago

Dominus Estate

Dominus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2001

Big lush, dark fruit that has not reached its peak window yet. But she ain’t far away. I was able to obtain a vertical of 01,02,03,& 04. My first foray into that vertical. No rush on this one but very impressed. Leather, pepper, if not cigar leaf here . Suffice it to say, there is a lot going on here and my lack of Cali knowledge has new intrigue — 10 months ago

Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Red Blend 2004

Just wow! Blown away by this one. New private wine bar in Dallas had this on the list! Surprised to see this wine. The wine took some time to open up in the glass. I would have decanted this wine for hours if served at home, but not an option last night. Plenty of smiles as this evolved in the glass. Expressive nose, no tannins, nice acidity. Beautiful expressions of dark fruit peeking through, but not enough time to really shine. Still a fabulous bottle that I’m grateful I was able to enjoy with friends. — 3 years ago

I recommend a decant for at least a couple of hours (or more after testing). For some reason this wine takes time to express itself. Good luck!!

Bodegas Borsao

Tres Picos Campo de Borja Garnacha

Deep purple without any brick. Tarry black fruit jam on the nose. Bright grape and jam on the palate. A heavy rendering of Grenache with tons of alcohol. Drink right away with grilled meats. — 6 months ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1971

1971 vintage. Top shoulder fill. Used a Durand but fully saturated cork still required some clean up on aisle 7. Decanted and tasted after 5 minutes. Threw much much less sediment than expected. Decent color with a little browning. Tertiary nose gave way to similar flavors with it being very slightly brickish. In a holding steady phase where there is no shining light to chase after-everything is consolidated and filed away so you're tasting the interpretations of history. Instructive. 6.13.24. — 2 years ago

Cornas Syrah 2008

🔥🔥🔥. Old-school, brawny Cornas with an obvious Chaillot imprint. Granite, woodsmoke, ash, savory spice, pepper, leather, truffles, dried black fruit, menthol, graphite. The minerality is profound. Tannins and acid match the cooler vintage, firm and postured but incredibly textural. Cork was perfect. Day 2 is meat, soy, cocoa, and a juicier fruit profile coming through. The whole cluster had shed away and the umami is really showing. Glad to see this drink this well tonight! — 4 years ago

1990 Chateau Rayas. Opened and poured right away. Drank this after the 1990 Guigal La Turque and 1990 Chave. This was by far the winner. Elegant, feminine, burgundy-esque. Absolutely perfect. — 5 years ago

Château Calon-Ségur

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

Came away somewhat disappointed, but upon further reading, likely because I didn’t know the house style. Structure was still kicking for an 01. Nose was beautiful, but wine lacked a richness and body I was hoping for. Austere. Bordeaux clearly has more range and I have more to learn :-). Drank alongside beautiful wagyu in Kyoto — 7 months ago

Tenuta San Guido

Bolgheri Sassicaia Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 1999

Jamaica allspice submerged in black cherry, black raisin, African violets, red roses, cooked poppyseed, grilled, wine marinated steak with rosemary garnish. The palate is silky with medium mouthfeel and stealthy tannic hooks are whisked away like burrs and prickles on a satin sock. Sweet Connecticut wrap of tobacco is assisted by a minute mocha and black peppercorn. This took a while to open, surprisingly, but well worth the wait!

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1989

Thanksgiving with relatives. Brother-in-law never has had an Opus One so I dug into the cellar and found my last one; a 1989 half bottle. I thought it was passed its prime but the brother-in-law thought it was wonderful! I’m not remembering where this vintage rated. Some people just like the funkiness of old wines but I just like them much younger. It was time for this one to go away and am glad some got some enjoyment out of it. His rating, not mine. I gave up on the brand several years ago, sold off my collection at a profit and haven’t looked back. I’ll try it if it is presented to me but don’t have a desire to purchase anymore. — 4 years ago
