1971 vintage. Top shoulder fill. Used a Durand but fully saturated cork still required some clean up on aisle 7. Decanted and tasted after 5 minutes. Threw much much less sediment than expected. Decent color with a little browning. Tertiary nose gave way to similar flavors with it being very slightly brickish. In a holding steady phase where there is no shining light to chase after-everything is consolidated and filed away so you're tasting the interpretations of history. Jamaica allspice submerged in black cherry, black raisin, African violets, red roses, cooked poppyseed, grilled, wine marinated steak with rosemary garnish. The palate is silky with medium mouthfeel and stealthy tannic hooks are whisked away like burrs and prickles on a satin sock. Sweet Connecticut wrap of tobacco is assisted by a minute mocha and black peppercorn. This took a while to open, surprisingly, but well worth the wait!

Came away somewhat disappointed, but upon further reading, likely because I didn’t know the house style. Structure was still kicking for an 01. Nose was beautiful, but wine lacked a richness and body I was hoping for. Austere. Bordeaux clearly has more range and I have more to learn :-). The nose on this after opening was insane. Small berries, stoney minerality and a bit of spice...thought i was onto a total banger. This sadly faded away after 2-3 hours and became a bit la la and compoty. It seems unfair to judge such a young wine and I have 3 bottles left which I will drink after 5, 10 and 15 years (he says now then drinks them all in the coming weeks). There seems to be massive potential...the taste just needs to catch up to that nose!!!

1990 Chateau Rayas. Opened and poured right away. Drank this after the 1990 Guigal La Turque and 1990 Chave. This was by far the winner. Elegant, feminine, burgundy-esque. Absolutely perfect. — 5 years ago

Big lush, dark fruit that has not reached its peak window yet. But she ain’t far away. I was able to obtain a vertical of 01,02,03,& 04. My first foray into that vertical. No rush on this one but very impressed. Leather, pepper, if not cigar leaf here . Suffice it to say, there is a lot going on here and my lack of Cali knowledge has new intrigue — 8 months ago

It was Father’s Day and I had decided on grilled rack of lamb for dinner so I selected this bottle of 2011 Chateau Musar rouge from our cellar. According to Musar’s records, the 2011 vintage was one of the most challenging since the early 1990’s. It was ultimately a late-maturing vintage with harvest taking place on October 13th, the latest since the 1983 vintage!

I decanted this bottle about eight hours prior to dinner. It should be noted that immediately upon opening, the bouquet was strikingly gorgeous with powerful aromatics that were obvious from several feet away and this trait carried through until dinner time.

In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet color. Slightly turbid with a near opaque core. On the nose, black plums, blackberries, cassis, tobacco, organic earth, exotic spices, leather, spiced meat, and pomegranate. I detect a touch of VA as well. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the nose with an added bit of red rope licorice. Lovely, long, savory…amazing. This was a brilliant compliment to the lamb (which was served with beets and goat cheese and fattoush) and everything I wanted in a Musar tonight. Drinking well now with a hefty decant and I expect well cellared examples to drink well past 2035. — 2 years ago

Magical Dom for beach weekend in Phuket. Bottle was a little concerning as the cork came out a bit too easily and no pschttt. However the nose revealed right away that this was going to be special. Almost toffee and brioche notes on both the nose and the palate. Classy, complex with caramel and burned sugar notes, but almost weightless. Will remember this one for a while — 4 years ago
