Screaming Eagle

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 1997

In an evening of pleasant surprises, this may have been the biggest of them all. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been, but looking at the lineup of legends, can one blame me? Screaming Eagle is one of those wines you read about but rarely see, let alone get an opportunity to drink. An expensive, cult Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville? Hardly original these days (though it could be argued that Screaming Eagle was the OG for the “category”). But, this was not some anonymous OTT Napa Cab. This was a brilliant, impeccably balanced, varietally correct expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville and perhaps, one of the best I’ve ever had.

The 1997 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing (still) and utterly brilliant with perfectly wisened black currants, brambles, dried leaf, tobacco, Poblano pepper, purple flowers, salmiakki, a lovely mix of cool and warm spices and organic earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, silky and punctuated with pleasant minerals. Looking at the label and seeing 13.8% ABV brings a smile to my face. This wine has remarkable confidence. To say I’m impressed would be a gross understatement. I’m smitten. Drink now with some air and enjoy through 2047+.

Château Haut-Segottes

Clos Petit-Corbin St. Émilion Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2018

Smells tight right out of the bottle through an aerator (as you’d expect). Tastes very good! But, anonymous. It tastes like very good high quality wine. — 5 years ago

Woodward Canyon

Washington State Chardonnay 2017

If you aren’t digging into the contemporary jazz scene in London right now, you are missing out on some of the best music being produced. This is from Ezra Collective and wears strong influence from both Afro-Beat music and spiritual jazz. Chardonnay from Woodward Canyon is positively hypnotic with a little air. Perfect balance of fresh acid & powerful fruit. A great Sunday evening. — 7 years ago

@MaJ CappS - Kamasi is incredible. Check out Cochemea- All My Relations. New stuff from the sax player of the Dap-Kings. A combo of Spiritual Jazz/Latin/Native American music. Absolutely incredible.

Château L'Arrosée

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1990

A little anonymous — maybe over the hill- but tastes like old (good) wine. Still medium acidity — what fruit there is tastes anonymously “red” and like (dried) fig. Thinned out. Some of the stylistic pine. Oldest wine I’ve tried. 90. — a year ago

Stags' Leap Winery

Napa Valley Merlot 2018

Pop-and-pour through an aerator. Nose: burned orange. Fresh turned soil. Cranberry. Rose (very subdued). A little more anonymous than I had hoped, but well made - “elegant.” Taste: red fruits (ripe pomegranate), dry tobacco, aromatic wood. Coconut. Bay leaf. Chalk and clay. 90-91. EDIT: A LOT of raspberry comes out with air. Also, a bit of pineapple (?). Point being: tart fruit. — 4 years ago

Not much of a nose. Taste is a bit of stones and dark cherry and other dark fruits (not bright), a little bit of tannin. Anonymous, but I like it. Medium weight. Quality. May buy again. It is hard to describe but just tastes like pretty quality wine. Air improved significantly. — 5 years ago

Château Daugay

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

looks a little older (as it is).

NOSE: mild mushroom, leaves, pencil, a fruity-and-floral quality I can’t quit pin down, very mild licorice. Oregano. A little crayon/wax. Definitely some home-down European yeastiness, almost Italian rather than French (perhaps not the best way to describe it, but that’s how I think about it). Spice. Red cherry.
TASTE: very subtle, a little anonymous for me. Medium weight. Tea and spices; muted peppercorn. Cedar. Earth. Anise on the finish. Well made, elegant, but forgettable. Might be a little too old. 89.
