Modus Operandi Cellars

Center of Gravity Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Shay A
9.4

I’m a fan of the Modus wines and Jason, but think he excels when he experiments (like his Antithesis red). What makes this unique is the transferring of their single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from barrel to tank for bottling, then combining the yeast lees from all 10 barrels back into two new French oak barrels from the vintage. Then, it’s reintroduced to the newly homogenized wine from the tank into the barrels with the 10x yeast lees for an extra 1.5 years of aging.

Almost three years since my last one, and not much has changed. The signature of this wine is the creamy mouthfeel. This is in the vein of many “Super SauvBlancs” but where it differs is that it doesn’t go too overboard in how tropical/sweet it is (still has a tropical vibe though). White peach, underripe pineapple, honeysuckle on the nose. Great texture on the palate with salted lemon cream, pear, and a vein of mineral/limestone poking through with the acidity. Mouthfeel goes on even after the last drop. Will cruise for a few more years, but this is in the zone right now.

His ‘20 is on sale at the moment…for $45, it’s a wonderful QPR.

Demarie

Langhe Nebbiolo 2021

Young but pretty solid. Tar, baking spice, crushed dried roses and thyme, some anise and a little leather, good red fruit acidity and lots of tannins. From Town Center Wines, Eastham. 04/08/23 — a year ago

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1959

Dark tawny center with amber color and clear rims. Barely translucent. Massive nose of tobacco and Cuban cigar with notes of sweet black fruit, moist dark soil, unsweetened chocolate, pencil lead, old cedar desk wood and a little barnyard. Great mouth feel and texture. Very much alive. Opened and slow-ox’d for a few hours, then put in a decanter an hour before. This powered up all night. Last sip was the best. I’ve probably had more LB than any other Bordeaux (young and old, mostly old), and this was head and shoulders better than any previous bottle. Great juice! — 2 years ago

Bodegas Faustino

Gran Reserva Faustino I Rioja Tempranillo Blend 1970

Surprisingly fresh with a really pretty mulberry and black cherry nose. A blackcurrant confit center with hints of oak and a bit of musk. Stop a bit of hidden power but clear and precise. Very good — a month ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1959

Dark scarlet color with a deep center. Notes of black cherry, cola, roses, cassis, some spice and a little wood char. Amazing perfume in the nose. Smooth and silky in the mouth. Lots of drama with this one, and many agreed the 59 was better than the 45, the 61 and 82 Latours beside it. Bravo! — a year ago

Domaine Cecile Tremblay

Les Feusselottes Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2017

Served blind, I had it as seriously high quality Vosne, like that of CLB. Its perfect prep of a decant for 3 hours and then back into the bottle for 1 hour before serving bypassed the Domaine’s typical smoky reduction and allowed its fruit purity and floral bouquet to take center stage. At this point, it wafts from the glass flaunting a red fruited and fresh violet profile with Vosne-like spices and an elegant, lifted and palate caressing texture. It continued to beautify and expand itself over the course of the night, never shutting down, and showing just how special Madame Tremblay’s wines can be. Chambolle with Vosne flair 👌🏻👌🏻 — 2 years ago

Trediberri

Trediberri Barbera d'Alba 2022

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2022 Barbera d'Alba is a fabulous wine that marries Barbera fruit richness with a Nebbiolo-like sense of structure. Aging is done entirely in cement. Ripe cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal and blood orange are front and center in this juicy, inviting Barbera. $23.00 (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024) — 5 months ago

Orin Swift Cellars

Abstract Grenache Blend 2022

Blend of Grenache, Syrah & Petite Sirah, very dark Ruby with purple center, aromas of fresh ripe black/blue fruits with floral & spice. On the palate flavors of black cherry and blackberry with cacao, espresso and vanilla notes with savory chewy tannins, well balanced, long finish ending with fruit and toasty vanilla oak. Nice! Consistent Quality! — 5 months ago

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1961

Taken to Hawksmoor in NYC for our uncle’s 75th. Decanted in hotel for 7 hrs before dinner. Dark reddish amber edges with dark tawny color center. Opaque. Great aged Bordeaux nose. Notes of black fruit, tobacco and cigar, cassis, old desk wood, saddle leather, some anise, some barnyard and a little mint. Rich and silky in the mouth. Long finish. The bottle (mid shoulder) wasn’t in as good of condition as the one we had a few weeks ago, but the outcome was similar. Family and the Somm all loved it, as did I. — 2 years ago
