Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Red Blend 2011

It’s 10 years since Serge. Hochar’s death whilst swimming in Acapulco on NYE 2014 and I think it’s appropriate to celebrate his legacy that is the modern Chateau Musar.
I first tasted Lebanese wines in London circa 1986 when I used to go to a couple of Lebanese restaurants in Shepherds Market near Mayfair in London
Al Hamra is still in business
I’ve been to Beirut several times and always stock up at the airport duty free
So a toast to a departed icon of the wine world
Since my last 2011 4.5 years ago (see note) this has aged wonderfully and I’ve up my rating several points
Another few years and it will be further improved
Optimal decant time was around 3.5 to 4 hours
Ethereal stuff

Bekaa Valley Obaideh Merwah 2007

Vintage 2007 | in a recent blind tasting I did not recognize the white Musar. The organizer said: drink this one time and you will never forget. I do not agree. It’s special. It is an experience. But just like the red this Musar can have many faces. I liked the 2007. Well balanced, mild power, good acidity. Fine bitters in aftertaste. Lots of character. Easily a wine when tasted blind you can fool your friends. My wine friends said viura in majority. | paired with sushi — 4 months ago

Musar Jeune Rouge Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Blend is actually 50% Cinsault, 35% Syrah and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very dark inky ruby color with purple highlights. Aromas of black and blue berry fruit, violets and tobacco. The rich palate features flavors of cooked black cherry, blueberry and black berry/currant fruit with notes of sweet spices and black pepper. Long and lingering finish and a lovely soft/silky texture. No sign of oak aging. Acidity is plentiful but well balanced. Quite fresh and bright! Solid QPR. — 25 days ago

Bolgheri Sassicaia Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2012

Usually not a huge fan of Italian wines, but yeah, have been buying some Sassicaia over the years. As I put away some wines I stumble across this 2012 that should be ready to drink, so I bring it upstairs to decant it. Great nose and typical flavor profiles emerge. Nice acidity and a some background menthol flavors that remind me of some great Chateau Musar vintages. This is a vibrant wine with tannins still strong, but integrated; better on day 2.
Not one of my favorite wines, no surprise, but a solid well-made enjoyable Bordeaux blend

Levantine De Musar Red Blend 2021

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2021 Levantine de Musar pours a deep, nearly impenetrable ruby with a bright ruby rim. Medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is so fresh! Black cherries, brambles, licorice, purple flowers, tobacco and stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes on the nose, this continues the theme of freshness and I love it. The finish is long, tart and satisfyingly bright. This is a distinctive expression of the Bekaa and Musar that, while built well enough to age, is clearly made to enjoy while the fruit is fresh. — a year ago

Bekaa Valley Rosé Blend 2017

Popped and poured; enjoyed over two days. Better on Day 2. The 2017 Rosé pours a unique copper gold color with medium viscosity; no signs of particles or gas. On the nose, the wine is developing with fascinating notes of black lemon, bruised pink apple, raspberry, marjoram, tarragon, and dry earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with perceptible but low tannin and high acid. Confirming the notes on the nose with the addition of a somewhat nutty characteristic reminiscent of spiced almonds. The finish is medium+ and savory. A wine for thinking. Similar to the R. Lopez de Heredia wines: if you like the white, you will like the rosé. Just lovely. Drink now with patience and a slight chill; best after 2027 through 2037. — 7 months ago
