Domaine De La Vielle Fontaine

Edmond Cornu & Fils

Vielle Vigne Aloxe-Corton Pinot Noir 2021

Presented to me double-blind. The wine pours a deep ruby color with a transparent core and a slightly water rim with little to no variation; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing and clean, with notes of Bing cherry, raspberry, strawberry, red flowers, a dash of black pepper, sous bois, and fine warm spices. Perhaps a little new French oak? On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium and silky. Alcohol is medium. I think this does see some barrique. An elegant, pretty and quite delicious wine.

Initial conclusions: this could be Pinot Noir, Grenache (or blend), Sangiovese, or Nebbiolo from France, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, or Italy. The structure is not firm enough for Sangiovese, never mind Nebbiolo so I’m eliminating those two. I’m also eliminating Grenache as the ABV seems restrained and the whole-cluster and sous bois thing just has me leaning Pinot Noir. I think it’s leaning more towards structure and non-fruits so I’m narrowing my focus to France. Burgundy to be certain. Leaning towards the Beaune as it just doesn’t quite have the oomph I want from the Côte de Nuit. Final conclusion: this is a Pinot Noir from France, Burgundy, Beaune, Montélie from a more “classic” vintage like 2021. Well…I’m not terribly upset! I have to say, I often forget about Aloxe-Corton. I shouldn’t. Lovely stuff from Edmond Cornu. Drink now through 2041.

Starting to oxidize. The curse of this producer. The noise and color a little dark, but the palate is still vivacious and rich and dynamic. Drink up — 4 months ago

Ile des Vergelesses Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Pinot Noir

Would give it more time. Pleasurable but feels like it has a lot more to offer after more integration and the unfolding of the contents in the bottle. — 7 years ago

Pernand-Vergelesses Chardonnay 2016

Brioche, macadamia, citrus curd. Understated and taut, as the best Pernand whites have to be. This will be even more special in 5-6 years. — 7 years ago

Les Vergers Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2024

More stuffing compared to the village, rich and round, seems like a big wine. Lemon, lemon curd, orchard, flinty and saline. Shows me again this is not my kind of producer. Perhaps this will mellow out over time for now I pass. As all the other white Burghs $$$. — 13 days ago

El Principal (Valette Fontaine)

Memorias Red Blend 2015

Chassagne-Montrachet Chardonnay 2024

Very citrusy, hint petrol, some hazelnut notes. Faint tropical undercurrent. Apricots, Passionfruit. Not my style - just too tropical. Ok though. Just to pricey. — 13 days ago

IME…this producer tends to make”hot” and intense wines while trying to straddle that delicate line between fruit/acidity and oak. The oak is always too prominent (for many palates-including mine) for 3+ years. To be fair, haven’t had anything from them older than 5 years old. Appreciate the style they’re trying to pull off but it’s like brewing pilsner beers. There’s so little margin/fat to cover up faults/flaws. These wines are so big that any holes tends to be gaping vs miniscule.
