Reluctant

Bouchard Père et Fils

Les Cailles Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2005

2005 vintage. Opened but not decanted. Great fill and cork. Hovering about on the various drafts and reluctant to commit to any distinctive/particular characteristic other than ethereality. Decidedly precious and delicate. One bottle left. 12.5.25. — 7 months ago

Château Capbern-Gasqueton

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

Great value at $50.00 from K&L
Web notes,

The owner of this Chateau, Calon Segur takes some of it name Calon from the word 'calones' which were small transport skiffs that used to haul goods up and down the Gironde river. Back then boats were the best mode of conveyancing wine plus preferable to the reluctant donkey and other landlubbing transports. This fact is a big reason for this region's long successful trading history. Much to the dismay of more land locked wine making regions, Bordeaux enjoyed direct access to the water. Happily shipping great wines such as Chateau Capburn Gasqueton for centuries. As this red wine was transported away from the port, the owners would farewell it's strawberry and raspberry driven fruit flavours bound for distant thirsty lands. It's beautiful chalky tannins and fine oak would be missed as they were well on the way to our store's shelves, cellars and tummies. Hence raise a big cheers to the diminutive but very essential Calons! (And amazing value Bordeaux reds)
Chateau Capburn Gasqueton is situated in St Estephe, on the left bank of Bordeaux, France. Grapes have been grown on the property's grounds since the 12th century. However, the 18th century saw it's elevation into quality wine production when Nicolas-Alexandre, owner of Latour, Lafite and Mouton bought the Chateau along with Chateau Calon Segur. From 1894 to 2012 the Gasqueton family owned the Chateau - producing wines of great finesse and elegance. In 2013 the French insurance company Suravenir bought Chateau. Since then they have heavily invested in upgrading the estate whilst ensuring they preserve this historic and treasured wine producer. Its vineyard comprises of 62% Cabernet, 37% Merlot and a petite drop of 1% Petite Verdot!

Château Grand Mayne

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

Delicious St Emilio from fabulous vintage. So good, I am reluctant to sell the last case I imported. Has a great 10-15 year life ahead. 94 now, I’m on agreement with Jeb, James and Antonio.
Great black cherry, health dose of oak and grip and cherry lozenge. Yum with Bolognese.

Brauerei Heller Bamberg

Aecht Helles Schlenkerla Lagerbier

Really cool beer. Super smoky, malty, yeasty, vanilla, malt balls, almost peaty on the palate with a finish of smoked oysters(strange, I know). I was reluctant to spend $16 on a 4-pack, but have to say, it’s worth it. Could honestly have used more descriptors, so complex.. Doug, you’d love this. — 7 years ago

Thierry Allemand

Chaillot Cornas Syrah 2010

Seth Morgen Long
9.5

Tasted blind out of a decanter, this was not budging initially and felt lean, maybe stilted, and angular next to a plush 2015 Voge St. Jo. After an hour or two, the wine started to expand, and impress. Of course, after revealing, we were all present to the majesty of Thierry’s touch. This was not as brooding and dense as I remember it, rather, it felt like the wine was reluctant to strut its stuff until we required it to. Forget about the 2010’s for awhile. — 8 years ago

Yum, yum, yum. Pink perfection. I have only drank heavy reds and was reluctant to try rose. However, with 8 days over 90 degrees, I relented. Glad I did. — 8 years ago

Still a hint reluctant but benefits from as short decant and then begins to show well. There some earthy tones, light cherry if not floral testes. — 3 years ago

Tight and moody. This needs time. Even with a long decant it was reluctant to show much. The bones are there but tonight was a narrow underwhelming experience. — 5 years ago

Daumas Gassac

Mas de Daumas Gassac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2017

Pure magic. The first impression is a field of lavender and wild herbs. Then, black currants, flowers, iron, musk and wet earth waft from the glass. A delicate sweetness balances the impression of freshly squeezed blackberries on the palate, and each sip ends with a brush of tannins and more lingering, echoing fruit. Elegant, mysterious, and achingly pretty. I was reluctant to open this so young but it’s already so exhilarating. The back label says “enjoy for its complex fruit character in the first five years, or from 7 to 25 years for its depth and complexity.” I intend to! — 6 years ago

Sami-Odi

Baby Tui Syrah 2012

Sami-Odi Baby Tui 2012. Here it is folks. The one that sold me on Mr. Fraser McKinley. The bottle that confirmed the greatness. Every time I open Baby Tui, I say the same thing: “Best showing to date.” And its true! It just keeps getting better. Makes me reluctant to open another one because I’m running out! Years to go. But it’s so great RIGHT NOW! 4 hour decant. 14.9% alcohol. Room-filing aromatics. Cherries, raspberries, black pepper, grilled/charred meats and lavender. Same notes on the palate with powdery tannins. Wonderful texture. Dark and brooding yet rather lithe. Bold and well-structured. Classy and elegant. Long finish. Keep ‘em coming @Fraser McKinley — 8 years ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Brilliant. This wine has been reluctant to show the prowess of a 1982 Bordeaux but has evolved recently to show itself worthy of a great vintage and appears now ready for the long haul . Such a delight right out of the gate to enjoy. For those who follow the distinct palate of William Kelley, you will know the place this wine has today — 3 years ago

Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga

Riserva Rancia Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 1995

Amazingly youthful still with some life left for sure even at 25 yrs. Some bricking in the glass but still appeared younger than it is. Decanted for 2+ hours but didn’t really open up and hit its stride until about hour 5. Nose was very reluctant at first, some muskiness that I thought was some slight TCA but it eventually gave way to really interesting dried or stewed red fruits, cherry cola, menthol, and a slight herbal note. Complex red fruit is still present but shifting to more tertiary qualities. Medium plus body and acidity, mouth coating and completely integrated tannins. Really fun wine to watch evolve over a night. — 6 years ago

Henschke

Hill of Grace Vineyard Shiraz 1988

This took a little bit of coaxing to come out. It was very reluctant.
Originally in the decanter for 4 hours. Then Decanted twice more and put through the aerator twice.
Raisins, Pastry, biscuit, brioche, vanilla, cloves, nutmeg, coconut, chocolate, coffee, fig, prune, cooked blackberry, dried raspberry, cooked black plum, tar, forest floor, earthy, tobacco, game, vegetal, wet leaves, savoury, meaty.
Dry, medium plus acid, medium tannin, high alcohol, medium plus intensity, medium body, medium plus finish.
Outstanding quality
Drink now, potential for ageing, under 10 years.

Kendall-Jackson

Vintner's Reserve California Chardonnay

Was reluctant to buy this because it’s a mega-production wine. The WE 91 point review caught my attention and changed my mind. Saw it on sale for $11 and thought it was worth a try. Glad I did. This follows the typical CA Chardonnay profile of buttery with oak and vanilla, but it has a juicy quality with some nice acid to balance things out. Very creamy with pineapple and green apple notes. This would be a great crowd pleaser party wine. Would buy again — 8 years ago

Domaine Faiveley (Joseph Faiveley)
